BMW 2-Series Active Tourer (2014) Driven

Charleen Clarke gets behind the wheel of the front-wheel drive BMW 2-Series Active Tourer at its international launch in Europe. Could this be the most significant launch by the company?

BMW’s somewhat tumultuous 98-year history has been punctuated by a plethora of momentous model launches. For me, the most significant must be the little Isetta. After all, this odd child of the 1950s – described as ‘looking like the result of a high speed collision between a refrigerator, a scooter, and an ovulating chicken’ – was almost certainly the company’s saviour. The Isetta also marked a diametric change in the company’s thinking – it had previously been focusing on large cars.

Now, with the launch of the 2 Series Active Tourer, BMW is once again wandering down a new path. Because, for the first time, it’s opted for front-wheel drive. That’s like a Bavarian putting ice in his beloved beer!

Logic prevails

In typically non-emotional, German thinking, the powers that be at BMW have explained that the choice of front-wheel drive was driven by logic: the new front-wheel drive architecture – with a transversely-installed engine – allows maximum usage of the interior volume in a relatively small vehicle. They’re not quite as keen to give details of the heated, behind-the-scenes discussions that preceded the launch. “There was huge debate; front-wheel drive was a cultural clash for our company. This was an iconic change,” one BMW employee whispered to Cars.co.za.

However, eventually, that German logic prevailed. And the 2 Series Active Tourer was born … But does it actually work? And does it drive like a typical (rear-wheel drive) BMW?

The answers to those questions are yes and no respectively. Of course it doesn’t feel like a rear-wheel drive BMW. We put the car to the test over two days in Sölden, Austria, and it obviously feels quite different – push it hard around corners and there’s some understeer; floor the accelerator and – contrary to the claims of the engineers – there’s a miniscule bit of torque steer on the diesel. But will the customers care? I honestly don’t think so …

In fact, I believe that some customers won’t even notice the difference in the vehicle’s driving characteristics (versus typical BMWs) – especially considering that many of the customers will be women and newcomers to the BMW family. Those customers will focus on other features of the 2 Series Active Tourer – its safety, versatility and high seating position, for instance.

Cavernous interior

And there is little doubt that it’s a top performer in both of these departments. While it may not be a purist BMW (with the beloved rear-wheel drive such as an M235i), the 2 Series Active Tourer is a true BMW in all other respects. The build quality is simply impeccable, the interior finish is utterly delightful and it comes with a barrage of safety features.

That much goes without saying. However it also comes with more space, which is one of the vehicle’s most impressive features. The interior is utterly cavernous (both up front and at the rear) and the boot is impressive too. It swallows anything from 468 to 1 510 litres, and the rear seat slides too (so the legroom and load compartment capacity can be increased or decreased as required). We needed to use this feature; we had three suitcases (one small, one medium, one large) and it was utterly impossible to squeeze all three into the boot.

I also liked the foldable boot floor, which conceals a storage compartment with a handy multifunction tray, and the tailgate (which can be opened by swiping your foot underneath the rear of the car a la Ford Kuga).

The three transversely mounted engines – including a ground-breaking three cylinder – are über impressive. We got a chance to drive the two-litre diesel and the 225i, and they are both willing, smooth, quiet and exceptionally capable. I especially enjoyed the former, which churns out 110 kW while mustering peak torque of 330 Nm. The latter is ever so refined and, with an output of 170 kW, it takes a mere 6.6 seconds for the 0 to 100 km/h dash. I wished that we were on the German highways, so we could experience its top speed of 240 km/h.

Three-cylinder engine debuts

Sadly, we didn’t get a chance to experience the new three-cylinder petrol unit which does duty in the new Mini Cooper. On paper it sounds impressive – the engine has a displacement of 1.5 litres, generates 100 kW and “excels with its spontaneous throttle response, hearty appetite for revs and high pulling power” – or so we were told. It should provide an even smoother ride; the design of three-cylinder engines means they are not subject to first and second-order inertia forces, while the balancer shaft included on the BMW unit ensures that it operates even more smoothly over the entire rev range.

On a slightly negative front, I wasn’t mad about the Tourer’s styling. The front and rear are straight out of the BMW cookie cutter mould – know it, love it. However the overall impression is not the same. It’s looks like a typically conservative MPV, not a sleek and sensual BMW.

Having said that, I shared the horror of two Berlin-based journalists, who were outraged when a German writer noted that “the 2 Series Active Tourer looks just like a van”. A van it’s most certainly not – neither in its looks nor in its ride. In fact, its ride is just superb – it feels like a luxury car and there is hardly any wind or road noise.

BMW 2-Series Active Tourer Estimated Pricing and Arrival in SA

We will get the BMW 2-Series Active Tourer in South Africa in the first quarter of 2015. Four models will be available: the 218i, 220i, 220d and 225i, and pricing is expected to kick off at around R380 000 or so (depending on the fortunes of our ailing currency). Expect the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer to follow in the footsteps of the Isetta; you will be seeing lots and lots of them on our roads. In fact, expect a plethora of front-wheel drive BMWs on our roads in the future … not only the 2 Series Active Tourer.

Hyundai to Build Compact Crossover

It has come to light during an interview with Hyundai America’s Dave Zuchowski that Hyundai has plans to build a small compact crossover to take on the likes of the Nissan Juke and Ford Ecosport.

Speaking to Edmunds, Zuchowski called the upcoming crossover a ‘mini Tuscon’ which is an ix35 in our market. The compact crossover ‘would be a vehicle that would be really designed for Gen Y, for new first-time younger buyers. Think of maybe something that looks like a Juke or something that has edgy, dynamic styling.’

The nameless compact crossover is expected to come to the market around 2017. Whilst we have no pictures of the mentioned vehicle, Hyundai did bring out a concept of a small crossover during 2011 called the Curb Concept.

Alfa Romeo SUV To Be Launched in 2016

A new Alfa Romeo SUV with a new engine range is said to be on the way, and will act as a rival against the Audi Q5 and BMW X3.

Alfa Romeo SUV coming in 2016

According to a report by Auto Express, Alfa Romeo is planning to launch eight new models by 2018. These models will include two new SUVs which will be based on Alfa’s all-new rear/four-wheel-drive architecture, reported to offer 50:50 weight distribution.

Taking inspiration from the Kamal concept shown at the 2003 Geneva Motor Show, the range-topping version of the SUV is said to be powered by a turbocharged petrol V6 unit producing up to 373 kW, while a diesel version will deliver 261 kW of power. Rumours also suggest that these powerful Alfa models could get engines developed by Ferrari, while the engine line-up is also said to include newly developed four- and six-cylinder units.

There are also reports that towards the end of 2015 Alfa will introduce a 3-Series rival called Giulia, and will be followed by a larger model to go up against the 5-Series.

2015 Hyundai i20 Officially Teased in Sketches

Hyundai has revealed the first design sketches of the next generation 2015 Hyundai i20 set to launch in India on August 11.

The 2015 Hyundai i20 gets the Fluidic Design 2.0 treatment

The 2015  i20 was designed at Hyundai Motor’s Design Centre Europe in Russelsheim, Germany, and was inspired by the brand’s ‘Fluidic Sculpture 2.0’ design philosophy that was also used in the 2015 Hyundai Genesis that debuted at the Detroit Auto Show earlier this year.

Although spy images have already revealed the exterior and interior of the new i20, according to Hyundai, the design of the car is characterized by a long hood, sculpted body sides and a dark treatment for the C-Pillar.

It features a bold new Hyundai hexagonal grille up front, as well as a new thin horizontal strip connecting the headlamps. The digital sketches also show the vehicle sporting a new wrap-around rear window and unique treatment for the lamp clusters which combine with the car’s hatchback proportions to create a distinctive design.

Engine choices are said to be carried over from the outgoing model, with a hotter first high-performance N variant scheduled for release in 2015 as part of the company’s recently established sub-line-up of N-badged models.

The 2015 Hyundai i20 will be showcased at the Paris Motor Show in October, with an online reveal expected to occur this month or in September.

BMW i3 Plans a Hydrogen Model

Whilst the BMW i3 currently runs as an all-electric vehicle, reports are coming out that they may be looking to add a hydrogen fuel cell model into the mix.

BMW recently announced it would be working with Toyota to develop a new sports car and improve the fuel cell system together. We could be beginning to see the fruits of that labour. Fuel cells have often been touted as the way of the future but progress has been slow in developing the zero emissions technology.

Toyota has announced a fuel cell system for the 2015 Toyota FCV and it’s likely this same system would be used for the BMW i3 by 2016. The FCV has a claimed fuel range of around 500km but costs are stratospheric with the vehicle costing an equivalent of R700 000.

Audi A2Q Due in 2018

Autobild reports that Audi is working on a small tech driven SUV called the Audi A2Q, which is set to launch in 2018.
At the Frankfurt Motor Show three years ago, Audi introduced the A2 concept which was meant to be a successor to its A2 model. However until now, that idea was scrapped because apparently Audi thought it would cost too much money to develop such a car.

Audi A2Q details

The report further states that Audi considered the use of Q2 or Q4 for the car’s name, but can’t because both of those are trademarked by Alfa Romeo. Set to rival the BMW i3, the model will ride on the MQB platform of the Volkswagen Group, which is also shared with the Audi A3. The A2Q is also rumoured to be powered by an electric powertrain with a massive 500 km range.

In addition to this, Autobild is reporting that Audi is developing an electric version of their upcoming Q6 SUV which will also be offered as an EV with as much as 700 km of battery range, and may be launched in 2017.

Lexus IS-F to be Discontinued

The Lexus IS-F has been around since 2007 but struggled to compete with the strong performance sedans from Germany. It was soundly beaten by the likes of the BMW M3, Audi RS4 and the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG.

Lexus IS-F end in sight

A representative from Lexus was quoted recently confirming the rumour the IS-F was to be axed from the range. It’s not the end of powerful Lexus’ however as the upcomming RC-F is basically a coupe version of the newish IS sedan. The RC-F was launched at the beginning of this year at the Detroit motor show and like the now defunct Lexus IS-F features a 5-litre V8 at its heart but with a monstering 343 kW available. The RC-F is also available in a crazy Blazing Solar Flare colour.

Lexus has actually been on a bit of a roll recently announcing new products to its portfolio like the upcoming small crossover NX. There has also been recent updates to both the GS and IS ranges.

Mercedes-Benz Confirms Factory Upgrades and Models

Mercedes-Benz has announced plans to spend 1.5 billion euros ($2 billion) through 2020 upgrading its Sindelfingen plant and getting ready for production of a new vehicle.

Mercedes-Benz Confirms Factory Upgrades

The investment is said to be used for the modernisation of the Mercedes-Benz plant and long-term job security. Although the company has remained tight-lipped about specific details, they did however confirm they will build a new body shop, paint shop and logistics centre at the Sindelfingen site, as well as an additional assembly hall for a new version of the up-market Mercedes E-Class sedan.

The plant already builds the short- and long-wheelbase S-Class sedan and the S-Class Coupe. It will in addition build three additional S-Class models. The company also confirmed the plant will build the AMG GT and production is scheduled to begin in a few weeks.

“We are growing dynamically abroad while also investing more heavily in our German locations. The operating agreement linked to future-oriented investments with equally necessary cost optimization. This approach is the foundation of our success and the foundation of our growth strategy, Mercedes-Benz 2020. With the overall package we make Sindelfingen fit for global competition and secure employment,” said Dr. Dieter Zetsche, CEO of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars.

Renaultsport Racer Teased (video)

During June 2014 Renaultsport announced it would be building a brand new race car for its one-make World Series by Renault Championship. The teaser image for that can be found here.

They also said it would be powered by a Nismo engine capable of crunching out 373 kW through a seven-speed sequential gearbox. The latest release shows more of what the race car will look like, as well as its awesome racer gargle at idle.

The R.S. 01 as the car has been named will be shown at the Moscow Motor Show for the first time. Renaultsport says it’s a ‘simply spectacular race car’ and will ‘become the next star in the World Series by Renault Championship’. We hope it will inspire a road-going version.

An American Honda spokesman has confirmed through Edmunds that two of its eco-friendly vehicles will no longer be available.

End of the road for the Honda Insight and Jazz EV

According to the report, both the Honda Insight Hybrid and Jazz EV will be discontinued, with the Insight being available till the end of the year. The Jazz EV is said to go out of production in the next coming months and Honda has promised to continue to support customers through their lease period.

“Our path forward includes a new generation of electromotive technologies, including expanded application of our two-motor hybrid system,” said Honda spokesman, Sage Marie.
