Volkswagen Beetle Dune Coming in 2016

Volkswagen will soon be adding more versions to the new Beetle in the coming years. Slated for 2016 is this Volkswagen Beetle Dune concept that will be a pumped-up bug with nice bits of exterior cladding and a tougher attitude.

Volkswagen Beetle Dune details

The Volkswagen Beetle Dune will come into production in early 2016 in both hard top and cabriolet configurations. There are no major drivetrain changes as the Dune will remain a front-wheel drive car with Volkswagen’s XDS differential playing a ‘traction enhancing’ game if things get a little rough. The Dune will be raised by 50mm over the standard Beetle and widened by 26mm.

The significant changes are left to the exterior as the Dune aims to be more aggressive and rugged looking – as you can see from the pictures. It will probably cost more than the standard car and be powered by the more powerful engines in the range. At the concept release the Dune was to be powered by a 155 kW 2-litre turbo motor with the six-speed DSG gearbox doing the shifting.

Let’s hope it comes to South Africa as it’ll make for a fun and interesting car to hit our roads.

Mercedes-Benz CLA Shooting Brake Confirmed for 2015

Mercedes-Benz has officially confirmed production for the CLA Shooting Brake which will be introduced next year.
This announcement comes after numerous rumour reports and camouflaged prototypes released on the web. The 2015 CLA Shooting Brake will be the fifth member to join the A-Class range after the hatchback, sedan, crossover and B-Class MPV models.

CLA Shooting Brake Design Cues

The model features design cues from the bigger CLS Shooting Brake, but it will have a different rear, and will share its mechanical platform with the CLA sedan.

Engine line up is said to be made up of turbo, four-cylinder petrol and diesel units. There will be a choice of manual or seven-speed dual-clutch gearboxes, and front- or 4MATIC four-wheel drive systems.

The stylish CLA estate is also expected to receive an AMG version, but that will happen at a later stage after the standard model’s launch. More details will be revealed closer to launch.

More Powerful Bentley Mulsanne Headed To Paris

Bentley is planning a performance version of its range-topping Mulsanne sedan which will be unveiled at the 2014 Paris Motor Show, and will apparently help celebrate the brand’s recent GT3 racing success.

Upgraded Bentley Mulsanne at Paris Motor Show

Bentley’s CEO Wolfgang Durheimer mentioned to Auto Express at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, that there are plans of a high-performance Mulsanne which would fit with the company’s “sporting luxury” image.

The model is said to follow closely at the footsteps of the recently introduced Continental GT3-R and is expected to keep the twin-turbo 6.75-litre V8 engine but its output will be boosted from the series 377 kW to closer to 410 kW, while the 0-100 km/h sprint time will decrease to less than 5 seconds.

The updated Bentley Mulsanne is also said to feature suspension tweaks and other chassis changes to improve responsiveness. Weight is also expected to be reduced, as seen in the aforementioned Continental GT3-R which lost 100 kg.

Expect more details leading to the vehicle’s debut at the 2014 Paris Motor Show in October.

Nissan Qashqai (2014) Driven

The original Nissan Qashqai was an undoubted success for Nissan, selling 2-million worldwide and over 20 000 locally since 2007. Now, the original compact crossover vehicle is modernising itself in a market flooded with compact crossovers and SUVs. Has Nissan done enough to continue its top selling trend? Well here’s my first impression after the vehicle was launched to the SA press on 1 July 2014.

Edgier Styling

Whilst the styling of the previous generation Nissan Qashqai wasn’t outstanding or sexy, it was inoffensive, and that meant people were willing to look under the skin to meet the well specced and practical vehicle that lay beneath.  This new Nissan Qashqai has upped the ante on the styling, integrating bits of other good-looking SUVs into its Nissan distinctive style.

At the front I see a bit of Kia Sportage, at the back a bit of Ford Kuga, but it’s definitely still Nissan. It looks good, from the first pictures released last year I expected the Qashqai to be a lot bigger but seeing it in the flesh it still looks compact yet grown up from the original.

Nissan Qashqai Engine Lineup

Underneath the bonnet, Nissan’s initial lineup consists of three engines and two transmissions. The only petrol version is a 1.2-turbo that starts the range off with 82 kW and 190 Nm. The petrol wasn’t available to drive at the launch but it will be interesting to see how well it does at shifting the Qashqai around. Even though this Qashqai is 40 kg lighter than before the small turbo engine may struggle with the weight of a family and luggage.

Then comes two diesels: a 1.5-litre turbodiesel with 81 kW and 260 Nm and a six-speed manual transmission followed by the top of the range 1.6-turbodiesel that puts out 96 kW with 320 Nm. The 1.6 has the choice of a CVT gearbox with front-wheel drive or the six-speed manual with all-wheel drive. The 1.5 is a super little worker bee of an engine, a little turbo lag at the very bottom of the rev range, but then once it’s going it pulls cleanly the whole way through to red line without any of the usual high-rev diesel vibration you normally get. It gets up to 120 kph easily and the manual gearbox is a swift shifter that helps keep the forward momentum up as you accelerate through the gears.

The 1.6-turbodiesel we drove had the CVT equipped and does a decent job. There’s a little sluggishness when you want to pull away quickly or get into a gap in traffic but other than that it’s definitely an easy CVT to live with. That said I’d still prefer a manual, especially one as good as the new Qashqai has, so if you want that you’ll have to opt for the all-wheel drive variant or downsize to the 1.5-turbodiesel.

Excellent Ride

Probably the best feature on this new Nissan Qashqai is the ride comfort. Nissan has developed a new chassis control system that has two facets that help it remain tremendously comfortable over bumps and undulating surfaces as well as making it corner better. The first chassis technology is Active Ride control which, enhances the comfort of the ride by controlling the body of the Qashqai with subtle braking of individual wheels when the surface underneath undulates.

The second is Active Trace Control that works with the car’s traction control system to correct the vehicle’s direction when cornering. It helps the Qashqai feel quite agile in the corners whilst keeping the comfort over bumps and holes unobtrusive. The steering feel is nicely weighted with the option of a Sport or Normal adjustment depending on if you want a slightly heavier (Sport) or slightly lighter (Normal) feel to the turn.

Upgraded Inside

Once inside the new Nissan Qashqai you instantly notice that the cabin has been given a big upgrade from the previous generation. Where there was hard plastic before and block buttons and dials there’s now cosseting soft touch rubber and rounder knobs and switches.

It’s been given the luxury touch where the old one felt basic but robust. The new seats are very comfortable, even in the basic cloth trim on the 1.5 Acenta. One thing we did notice in both models we drove was the wind noise deflected off the large wing mirrors at higher speeds which is a bit annoying.

Interior Gadgets

The interior spec on the Qashqai varies depending on what add-on pack you opt for but standard with all models are a 5-inch full-colour HD display, remote central locking, a fully-compatible audio system with four speakers, a multi-function steering wheel, Bluetooth, cruise control, two cup holders, four bottle holders and manual air conditioning. Click here for more details on the specification levels.

Summary

Things look promising for the Qashqai as it heads into a market full of competitors. The Koreans have done well with the Kia Sportage and the Hyundai IX35, the Audi Q3, Ford Kuga and BMW X1 are there or thereabouts at the upper end of the price range. You also can’t count out fringe rivals like the Renault Duster and Suzuki SX4 but Nissan still hopes to shift 350 to 400 units a month which is what they were doing at the peak of previous Qashqai sales.

The new Nissan Qashqai comes with a 5yr/90 000km service plan and a 6yr/150 000km warranty. Click here for the pricing of the 2014 Nissan Qashqai.

Lamborghini Aventador SV Planned

Rumour has it Lamborghini is set to introduce a refreshed version of the Aventador LP700 it released about three years ago.

Lamborghini Aventador SV to be introduced

The company is yet to make an official statement, however Team Salamone – from Gumball rally fame – is claiming it has ordered the first Aventador SV.

According to them, the model will be introduced “in months from now” and production will occur shortly afterwards. Also the models is said to most likely follow in the footsteps of the Murcielago LP670-4 SuperVeloce and feature an aggressive body kit, as well as a minimalist interior, with a number of weight saving measures. The upcoming Lamborghini Aventador SV might also come fully equipped with an upgraded engine.

The company last year celebrated its 50th anniversary with the launch of the Lamborghini Aventador LP 720-4 50 powered by a 6.5-litre V12 engine that develops 529 kW of power and is connected to an ISR transmission which enables the model to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 2.9 seconds and reach a top speed of 350 km/h.

The special model also features the 50th anniversary emblem in the cockpit, produced in a carbon-fibre material patented by Lamborghini.

No Plans for BMW M4 Gran Coupe

BMW M GmbH’s Jorg Bartels has confirmed that there are no plans to extend BMW’s line up with the M4 Gran Coupe.

M4 Gran Coupe plans scrapped

Bartels made this announcement at the Australian launch of the M3 sedan and M4 coupe models. “It was definitely considered, but there is no plan to build an M4 Gran Coupe,” he said in an interview with Carsguide.

“Part of the reason is expected production volume, but also the 4-Series Gran Coupe is built in a different factory to both the 3-Series (sedan) and 4-Series (coupe), so there are a lot of challenges there.”

The 3-Series and its M3 performance variant are built at BMW’s Regensburg plant while the 4-Series and M4 are built at BMW’s Munich plant. The 4-Series Gran Coupe, meanwhile, is built at BMW’s Dingolfing plant.

On another sad note, Bartels also confirmed that an M version of the 3-Series Gran Turismo won’t be built.

BMW does however sell an M6 Gran Coupe which was designed to be the ultimate sports sedan, and is equipped with a twin-turbo 4.4-litre V8 engine that develops 412 kW and 680 Nm of torque.

It is connected to a seven-speed M Double Clutch Transmission which enables the car to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 4.2 seconds and hit an electronically-limited top speed of 250 km/h or 305 km/h with the optional M Driver’s Package.

First 5-Door Mini Comes off Production Line

The first 5-door Mini Cooper has come off the production line at Mini’s Oxford factory in England.

5-Door Mini production details

The 5-door Mini is an all-new product and aims to broaden the brand’s appeal. This product is also part of the massive R 1.3 billion investment across BMW Group UK’s factories and facilities.

The 5-door Mini will be going on sale later in 2014 and I’m confident it will see a South African introduction by the end of the 2014. The new car is built on an all-new platform and this allows more models and different varieties to be built more efficiently.

BMW Group Business Secretary, Vince Cable said: “The launch of the all-new 5-door MINI is a further boost for the UK’s manufacturing sector, and will help to secure jobs in Oxford and Swindon as part of BMW’s £750 million investment programme in the UK. BMW’s continued commitment and investment in the UK underlines the continuing success story that is UK automotive manufacturing.”

Next-Gen Jeep Wrangler Confirmed for 2018 Model Year

Jeep boss Mike Manley has confirmed an all-new Wrangler is in the pipeline and will come sometime in 2017 as a 2018 model year vehicle.

Redesigned 2018 Jeep Wrangler in the works

In an interview with Edmunds, Manley said that the new Jeep Wrangler will focus greatly on fuel economy, weight reduction and off-road prowess. It’s also believed the model could end up boasting an aluminium body, and will have its own platform unlike the Chrysler 200 and Jeep Cherokee that were developed on a Fiat platform.

“We must be innovative in terms of what we do for the next Wrangler because clearly we have to make sure that vehicle survives into the future. It is vital for the brand,” said Manley

Manley also said a major focus is on bringing engine improvements in order to create a product that will “push the benchmark even further.” The upcoming next-gen Wrangler will be significantly more fuel efficient in order to meet more stringent federal regulations that require automakers to boost the fuel economy of their vehicles annually through 2025.
