Toyota Etios gets upgrade for 2013

Engine Capability

The Toyota Etios is fitted with a 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder engine mated to a 5-speed manual transmission and produces 66 kW at 5 600 rpm and 132 Nm of torque at 3 000 rpm. This allows the Etios to sprint from zero-100 km/h in 11 seconds. Fuel economy is rated at 5.9-litres/100km for the sedan and 6-litres/100km for the hatch in the combined cycle.

The Etios features an enhanced noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) package which includes a switch from rubber engine mounts to more refined, sound-absorbing hydraulic mounts. New Exterior and Interior Features

Enhanced exterior features include a new grille design which remains black for the Xi models while the Xs models get a chrome finish. Other alterations include body colour door mirrors across the range as well as a new exterior mirror. The new design of the Etios enhances aerodynamic performance with aero stabilising fins on the outer mirror base that contribute to ensuring handling stability and reducing wind noise. The rear end has also been refreshed courtesy of a new tail lamp design for both the hatch as well as the sedan.

The flagship Xs models receive newly designed front seats, which now have separate head rests as well as height adjustment for the driver’s side, additional cushioning and under-thigh support. The Xs lineup also benefits from a standard 2-DIN audio system and an Auto Up function for the driver’s electric window switch, while the Xi models now get pre-wiring for door speakers and instrument panel speakers.

Volvo Car Group boosts development of electrified cars

As Volvo continues to develop cars of the future, the unique technology solutions involved can be integrated throughout the electrification range. The strategic partnership between Volvo Car Group and Siemens was formed in 2011 and has resulted in the development of electrified cars that can also be charged faster and feature a more powerful motor.

“Adding the innovative fast charging solution will radically improve the time and mileage for the daily usage of the car. This will drastically improve the cost of ownership since the customer will now be able to drive many low cost kilometres per day. A quick 10-minute plug-in adds power for another 20km of driving,” said Lennart Stegland, vice president, electric propulsion systems, Volvo Car Group.

The new Siemens motor has a peak power output of 89kW and a torque of 250Nm with an acceleration of 0-70km/h in 5.9 seconds. Siemens is the main supplier of electric propulsion power train components for the forthcoming Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) platform, which enables sophisticated electrification at all levels – from different kinds of hybrids to pure electric drive, without intruding on interior or load space.

World-First innovation for Volvo Car Group

The new 22 kW fast-charger is the world’s first on-board charger that operates on a three-phase supply and is small enough to be fitted in an electric car. It uses a three-phase outlet, and a charge takes 1.5 hours, while an ordinary single-phase 230 V household outlet takes 8-10 hours, depending on the available current.

“We’re proud to have developed this unique solution. By offering more usable hours a day, we’ve taken an important step towards making electric cars more viable as a commercial proposition, in both the private and public sectors,” Lennart Stegland says.

Volvo Car Group in South Africa does not yet offer any of the Electric, Hybrid or Flexi-fuel models due to insufficient infrastructure, however, the brand does offer the most advanced and viable solutions for customers who want keep their carbon footprint to a minimum with the diesel engines that emit as little as 94g/km of CO2.

2013 Nissan Micra revealed

The new 2013 Nissan Micra has been revealed, which launched earlier this year in Thailand and is expected to launch in South Africa in 2014.

2013 Nissan Micra gets new face

The updated Micra engine line-up includes the same three-cylinder 1.2-litre petrol engine and a supercharged 1.2-litre DIG petrol engine which can do 4.1-litres/100 km and has C02 emissions of 95 g/km. Both engines are mated to a standard five-speed manual transmission or an optional CVT.

The new 2013 Nissan Micra sports a few exterior tweaks including a new front bumper, triangular fog-lights and more angular headlights as the main change. The car also gets a new rear bumper, modified tailgate trim and LED taillights. It can be optionally fitted with a panoramic glass roof, new paint hues, new alloy wheels and a park assist system.

The Micra’s cabin has had a bit of a nip and tuck and is fitted with a new gloss-black centre console with different air vents, electric front windows, remote central locking, ABS, ESP, power steering and CD/AUX/USB, a bigger infotainment screen and a redesigned instrument cluster.

Nissan South Africa confirmed the updated 2013 Nissan Micra will only be introduced in mid 2014 in South Africa. The model is currently under study and pricing will be communicated closer to the launch.

Porsche 911 Limited Edition model celebrates 50 Years

The Porsche 911 is one of the oldest sports coupe nameplates still in production and was developed as a much more powerful, larger and more comfortable replacement for the company’s first model, the Porsche 356.

The company will celebrate its success of the iconic 911 at the Frankfurt Motor Show with the special edition Porsche 911 50.

Porsche 911 50 – Features

The Porsche 911 50 is based on the 911 Carrera S but features a wider body and like the original back in 1963, the 911 50th Anniversary Edition is a coupe with a flat-six rear engine. The engine develops 294 kW and can sprint from zero to 100 km/h in 4.3 seconds before reaching a top speed of 300 km/h. The car’s NEDC combined fuel consumption is 9.5 l/100 km, which equates to CO2 emissions of 224 g/km.

The limited edition Porsche 911 50 is equipped with features that have contributed to the success story of the company’s icon such as the specially tuned Porsche Active Suspension Management, the sport exhaust system and special 20-inch wheels which are a visual tribute to the legendary ‘Fuchs’ wheels. They are finished in matte black paint with polished centres.

Other exterior features include chrome trim strips on the front air inlets, while the fins of the engine compartment grille and the panel between the rear lights emphasize the distinctive appearance of the model. Finishing off the sporty yet elegant design is the Porsche Dynamic Light System with bi-xenon headlights and dynamic cornering lights, as well as the high-gloss window frames and sport design exterior mirrors.

The interior features ‘911 50’ decals on the rear lid in a two-tone 3D effect, and are repeated in three-colour embroidery on the headrests and as a bicolour logo on the tachometer and the aluminium door sill plates. In addition, the interior is also finished with green labelling on the instruments coupled with white pointer needles and silver caps on the instrument pivot pins. Special attention is drawn to the centre panels of the leather seats, featuring a fabric pattern reminiscent of the ‘Pepita’ tartan design from the 1960s.

The standard sports seats feature 14-way electrical adjustment, while 18-way-adjustable items seats are offered as an optional extra. The gear shift or selector lever comes from the Porsche Exclusive program and matches the decorative panels on the dashboard, doors and centre console in brushed aluminium.

The anniversary Porsche 911 50 is available in two unique colours; a dark Graphite Grey, a light Geyser Grey metallic and an optional black monochrome.

Porsche 911 50th Anniversary Edition – Price

The Porsche 911 50th Anniversary Edition has a basis retail price of R1 369 000, based on a three-year DrivePlan, and R1 419 000 based on a five-year DrivePlan.

The limited edition model is currently available for order; however the first deliveries are scheduled to start in December this year.

New Ford Fiesta 1-litre Ecoboost Review

Ford raises the bar in what is hands down one of the best engines I’ve tested.

Early in 2013, the new Ford Fiesta made its appearance, which brought with it the new 1-litre EcoBoost engine derivative. Besides updates to the styling, safety and features, the updated range features the most recent winner of International Engine of the Year, and you’re in for a surprise.

New Ford Fiesta 1-litre Ecoboost review by John Beale

Engine

With the move to smaller capacity turbocharged units in full swing, the 1-litre 3-cylinder unit develops 92kW and 170NM, which is on par, and betters most 1.6-litre engines it competes against. Yes, a 1-litre turbocharged unit! A familiar, if not Porsche like transverse mounted thrum emits into the cabin on hard acceleration, and it sounds great! There is very little noticeable turbo lag from 1st gear, however rolling second gear acceleration requires a heavy foot to keep the unit from stalling. That said, it’s the perfect little unit for city driving with just enough torque and power to zip through traffic. Thankfully, you don’t have to trundle along on the highway, with the 5 speed manual gearbox making a surprisingly good fit with tighter gearing keeping access to torque curve just right.

Fuel economy is supposed to be another big benefit of the 1-litre unit, with Ford claiming 4.3l/100km on a combined cycle, thanks to the size of the unit as well as standard start-stop technology which switches off the engine when idling at standstill. Noticeably, with such a small unit, the air-conditioning has to be switched off for the start-stop system to work. This all said, the consumption figures quoted by Ford are going to be hard to match. I couldn’t get below 7.6l/100km on a combined cycle with majority highway driving, however did see the instantaneous consumption get down in the mid 5’s when cruising middle lane on the highway, so might be possible on long journeys. You’ll get just over 550km’s out on a tank if you hardly touch the pedal on the right.

Ride and Handling

As with all Fiestas the ride is the surprise. Ford has spent a lot of money developing a rather sporty chassis, which can be seen in the ST variant launched earlier last week. Comfortable over the bumpy stuff, but stiff enough when throwing her into corners, the balance to the suspension is where it pips the competition. As well planted as the Polo in every way. Power steering is light but communicates well without feeling as disconnected from anything in the front as the Koreans. Ventilated disc brakes up front with drum brakes rear (odd), featuring ASC( Traction control), ABS, EBD as well as Hill-Hold assist, most of which are options or not available in competing units.

Inside

The interior is typical Fiesta, hard touch plastics abound, but most everything except for smaller flaps and lids feel quality to the touch. In Trend specification, cloth seats, electric mirrors and windows, air-conditioning and Ford’s excellent SYNC system which provides Bluetooth and voice control, is a dream. Central locking, steering wheel controls, and Ford’s programmable MyKey help ease of access. The Ford Fiesta also boasts a 5-star Euro-NCAP crash test rating, and unlike the competition offers 7 airbags as standard. Definitely focus to a younger market here, giving everything they demand from an entertainment / tech perspective.
Rear seating capacity was on par with the likes of the Polo, and the boot fitted larger luggage well, what with it being deeper into the floor-bed.

Ford Fiesta 1-litre Ecoboost conclusion

No more 1.6-petrol, as this 1-litre turbo now fills that gap. South Africans will have to get that ‘bigger is better’ mentality out of their heads, but once you’ve tried the engine you’ll be sold. Price is the only thing that’s out of place here, with the Trend model tested starting at R211 200. It’s at a bit of a disadvantage as it prices against larger hatchbacks (Auris, Focus, Civic), with less specification.

If you’re willing to pay the premium for this excellent engine, you’ll be sacrificing on size of vehicle, but that’s your decision to make. A 4-yr 60 000km service plan is standard.
