Citroen DS3 Cabrio expands range

Citroen South Africa has added a new addition to the DS Line, the Citroen DS3 Cabrio, which uses intelligent design innovation to make top-down driving considerably easier and enjoyable.

Citroen DS3 Cabrio offers fine top-down motoring

Engine Capability

The Citroen DS3 Cabrio will be available with three petrol engine options. The VTi 82 1.2-litre three cylinder engine producing 60kW of power and 118Nm of Torque.

The VTi 120 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine producing 88kW of power and 160Nm of torque.

The turbocharged THP 155 1.6-litre engine producing 115kW of power and 240Nm of torque.

The VTi 82 and 120 models are mated to a five-speed manual transmission, while the high performance THP 155 model uses a six-speed manual transmission.

Exterior Design Features

The sophisticated and refined Citroen DS3 Cabrio retains the hatchback’s compact proportions and bold styling choices such as the floating roof, characteristic shark fin and front LED daytime running lights. The electrically adjustable soft top roof adds to the models distinctive personality. This technical innovation can be operated at driving speeds up to 120km/h. It takes just 16 seconds to close from the full open position and does not go down into the luggage compartment, thus providing the largest boot in the category at 245-litres.

Another unique and exciting feature is the tailgate which opens with a circular motion that allows easier access to the luggage compartment. Extensive work has been done in the wind tunnel on the aerodynamics of the Citroen DS3 Cabrio, which maximises performance and helps maintain low fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

Additional features include a three dimensional light signature with 3D taillights inspired by the Citroen Revolte and Survolt concept cars. The 3D light features a chrome finished DS logo in an embossed black DS setting and a set of 31 rectangular LED’s and semi-reflecting mirrors that reflect the light guide endlessly.

The five-seat Citroen DS3 Cabrio is fitted with all new upholstery including three Claudia leather options, while the dashboard colour replicates the roof colour. Customers can personalise the soft top roof in three optional colours: Brilliant Black, as standard, Infini Blue and DS Monogramme Moondust as optional.

“Following on from the global success of the DS Line to date and globally outselling Brands such as Infiniti, Alfa and Cadillac, the new Citroen DS3 Cabrio is yet another important addition to the DS3 in an image conscious market demanding individuality and personalisation. A combination of attractive pricing as a market leader in customisation makes for a compelling purchase argument in the ultra-competitive supermini category,” said Grant Bowring General Manger of Marketing for Citroen SA.

“Along with our re-positioning of DS3 Hatch from specification and price and the changes made to the DS3 line as a whole, owning a Citroen DS3 is more appealing than ever.”

Honda returns to F1 with McLaren as partner

The 2015 FIA Formula One World Championship will see the return of Honda as an engine supplier for McLaren.

The Honda McLaren Partnership

The partnership between McLaren and Honda ruled F1 between 1988 and 1992, and won eight world championships, during which it took the winner’s podium in 44 out of 80 Grands Prix.

In this restored partnership, Honda will be in charge of the development, manufacture and supply of the power unit, including the engine and energy recovery system, while McLaren will be in charge of the development and manufacture of the chassis, as well as the management of the new team, McLaren Honda.

New F1 systems and regulations

The decision for to re-enter F1 racing after 5 years had to do with Honda’s urge to be part of further developing new powertrain technologies. From 2014, new F1 regulations require the introduction of a 1.6 litre direct injection turbocharged V6 engine with energy recovery systems.

Over the years Honda has passionately pursued improvements in the efficiency of the internal combustion engine. With the recent development of pioneering energy management technologies such as hybrid systems, participation in Formula 1 under new regulations will encourage even further technological progress in both these areas.

“I am very happy to hear about Honda’s important decision to return to Formula One with McLaren from 2015. The introduction of the new power train next year, in the form of a 1.6 litre, 6 cylinder engine with direct injection and energy recovery, is a very exciting challenge and demonstrates a vision for the future of the sport. I am sure that Honda will become a strong contender in the years to come,” said Jean Todt, President of FIA.

2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class officially unveiled

The 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class has been officially unveiled and has been designed to become one of the most luxurious and advanced vehicles ever constructed by the german automaker.

2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class has lots to offer

Engine Capability

The 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class will be available with four engine options. The S350 BlueTEC features a 3.0-liter V6 diesel engine that produces 190kW of power and 620Nm of torque. This engine will enable the model to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 6.8 seconds and hit a top speed of 250 km/h.

The S500 is fitted with a 4.7-liter V8 petrol engine that develops 335kW and a maximum torque figure of 700Nm of torque. This will allow the car to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 4.8 seconds, reaching a top speed of 250 km/h.

The S300 BlueTEC Hybrid has a 2.1-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 150kW. Acceleration from 0-100km/h can be reached in 7.6 seconds to hit a top speed of 238 km/h.

The S400 Hybrid is equipped with a 3.5-liter V6 engine which delivers 225kW of power and a torque figure of 370Nm. This enables the model to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 6.8 seconds and achieve a top speed of 250 km/h.

Design features

The S-Class continues with the Mercedes Benz tradition of classic architecture fused with luxury, sophistication and automotive grandeur. The new S-Class’ exterior appears prestigious with a larger radiator grille, a long bonnet, and a powerful flowing roof line keeping with the cars sporty coupe-style features.

The Mercedes Benz hallmark ‘dropping line’ is structured elegantly on the side wall, while a subtle convex-concave effect gives rise to an extremely powerful and elongated body. The pronounced shoulder above the rear wheel adds further emphasis to the car’s athletic character. The new style taillights with up to 35 LEDs completes the S-Class’ meticulous design.

The lower air intakes now feature tiny louvres in high gloss black, which follow the shape of the grille. Completing the front-end design is a chrome strip on the lower part of the bumper. The 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class is also the first car in the world to do without a single light bulb and houses around 300 LEDs in the cabin, offer seven hues, five dimming levels and four dimming zones.

The headlamps have clearly defined contours and feature illuminated Mercedes Benz lettering, while the indicators, side lights and daytime running lamps are arranged behind the lens so that the brand’s hallmark ‘torch’ is immediately recognisable both day and night. The rear fog lamp is housed in the centre of the bumper, while the reflectors are elegantly integrated on the left and right sides.

Interior Design Features

The interior design of the 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class compliments the classic, superior and cutting edge exterior features. Horizontal elements and lines create a setting characterised by visual breadth, while ride comfort, spaciousness and user-friendliness distinguish the S-Class as the leading luxury vehicle in its class.

The redesigned display which appears to be free-floating extends behind the two-spoke steering wheel. This high quality unit is formed by the centre air vents and the analogue clock set into the low positioned three dimensional wood trim. The dashboard is characterised by the striking double-S curve. Wood trim is used generously around the dashboard and centre console, while metallic switch surfaces with pearl-effect paint finished in three colour shades.

Rear passengers have the option to choose from five different seats including energising seats that offer six different massage functions that use 14 air cushions. The First Class Rear Seat package has individual rear seats that are separated by a rear center console with folding tray tables. The package also includes thermo-cup holders.

There’s also a touch-sensitive telephone keypad and two high-resolution 12.3-inch displays – one for the instrument cluster and another for the infotainment system. The standard audio system has ten-speakers with either a Burmester Surround Sound system or a Burmester High-End 3D-Surround Sound system.

Innovative technology and safety features

The 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class is equipped with a range of new and advanced technologies including the optional Road Surface Scan system which uses a camera to scan the road for irregularities. If one is found, it automatically prepares the Magic Body Control suspension to deal with the situation. Entry-level models come equipped with an improved Airmatic suspension and an adaptive damping system.

Safety features include the Distronic Plus with Steering Assist and Stop&Go Pilot, Brake Assist Plus with Cross-Traffic Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist, Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus, Night View Assist Plus and Attention Assist.

“Rather than being about safety or aesthetics, power or efficiency, comfort or dynamism, our aspirations were ‘the best or nothing’ in every respect. No other car stands for the Mercedes-Benz brand promise more than the S-Class,” said Dr Dieter Zetsche, Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars.

Nissan Qashqai +2 Acenta Review

The Nissan Qashqai is nearing the end of its model life, but there’s still very little wrong with this solid 7-seater lifestyle package.

Nissan Qashqai +2 Acenta review by John Beale

A replacement model for the Nissan Qashqai is due in 2014, and in its last year, the limited edition models are here already. As I’ve said before, the Quashqai gives a pretty simple promise – It’s a comfortable, good value, leisure vehicle for those parents who are looking for something that has comfortable seating, extra space, good fuel economy and raised ground clearance. The +2 is essentially a 7-seater version of the Qashqai on a slightly extended platform.

Engine and gearbox

The standard 2-litre unit producing 102kW and 198NM of torque is surprisingly gutsy and pulls strongly through the revs. A noticeable improvement over the last unit I had for some reason. There’s enough torque from low down, and cruises quite easily in 6th gear on the highway to average 10l/100km on a combined cycle during my test. I would definitely opt for the 2litre unit if you’re going for the 7 seater, considering the size difference. The gearbox is however just as bad as it was in the previous unit, with it’s vague, disconnected, stick in a mud feeling when changing gears.

Nissan Qashqai – ride and handling

It’s comfortable but not wafty. Those good-looking 17-inch rims do just fine over the terrible tarmac in Joburg, but it’s definitely not as quiet as the Honda CRV. What is different in the +2, is that you can definitely feel the extra length and when turning corners feels a bit like a Chevrolet Suburban as it rocks about side to side when you turn quickly.

Steering is just right, but find that you have to keep your wits about you when turning as the weight can overpower on the direction you want to go. Parking lots are handled with ease as the steering is light. Overall, sitting high up also has its perks, and it handles acceptably on the highway. Should anything go wrong, the Acenta spec is equipped with vehicle stability control, ABS, EBD and a host of airbags.

Interior

The interior is getting on a bit and is now showing its age. Hard plastics and typical Nissan switchgear adorn the interior. It’s simple to use, and won’t confuse, but isn’t as well insulated as the Honda, and definitely feels a bit “old” now. There is however quite a bit of standard kit, including dual zone climate control, bluetooth with audio playback, auto lights, rain sensor, and electronically dimming rear view mirror and folding exterior mirrors. The seats are still not my favourite, covered in leather but little support, and make you feel like you’re sitting ON, instead of IN the car. The 2nd row of seats have sufficient legroom for adults, can move forward and have ISOFIX (Baby seat) mounts and separate vents.

That all important 3rd row of seating is fairly easy to get up, but provide very little support, and are flat and thin. Definitely only for the little kids in the family, considering their lack of support and how low down they sit in the car. With the seats up there is still a little bit of space left for small bags behind the seats.
Sadly there is VERY little hidey space, everything too small to actually use including the cupholders that can’t even hold a medium McDonalds drink.

Nissan Qashqai +2 conclusion

It’s a solid lifestyle offering for those who need the 7 seats, with a generous amount of standard specification in Acenta trim. The higher ride height and safety systems, make it a versatile vehicle for larger families. This said, there are other options on the market that, for a slight increase in budget, offer more space, more off-road prowess or a better engine. Very little wrong here, but with the new model coming in 2014, I’d press for a discount.

2013 Toyota Yaris line-up more refined

The 2013 Toyota Yaris range has been fined tuned to increase its competitiveness and focus on the most popular models.

New features and price cut for 2013 Toyota Yaris

The 2013 Toyota Yaris range will be available exclusively in five-door format yet still feature the 51kW 1.0-litre and 73kW 1.3-litre petrol engines. The range topping 1.5-litre petrol-hybrid option will continue to be badged ‘XS HSD’ and ‘XR HSD’ respectively.

“The 2013 Yaris is tasked with flying the Toyota flag in this ultra-competitive B segment and with the pared-down line-up and new pricing structures for this model, it now perfectly meets buyers’ ever more demanding requirements for smaller cars that are affordable to run, easy to live with, yet are still stylish, safe, comfortable and fun to drive.

He further added “We’re confident that the Yaris is going to win a lot more fans – after all the Castrol Team Toyota Racing Yaris is the brand new South African Rally Championship challenger taking up the mantle from the outgoing Auris.”

The three Yaris models will now have the previous Xs specification but at a lower cost. The 1.0 petrol has 15-inch alloy wheels, colour-coded body, Multi-Information Display, air conditioning, remote central locking, front electric windows and mirrors, audio system with input terminal and steering wheel switches.
