Cars.co.za raises money for charity

Cars.co.za was one of the main sponsors in the 5th Wide Horizon Hospice Charity 12 Hour Endurance Race that took place at the Vereeniging Kart Circuit on 27 and 28 October 2012. The event was hosted by Action Karting in association with Prokart, F400 Karting Challenge and Wide Horizon Hospice.

Raising Money for Charity

The annual Wide Horizon Hospice Charity 12 Hour Endurance Race aims to raise much needed funds for the Wide Horizon Hospice based in the Vaal Triangle. The Wide Horizon Hospice cares for the terminally ill and relies on the goodwill of the community to fund operating costs. Over the past five years the endurance karting community has raised over R234 000 in funds for the Wide Horizon Hospice. This year’s event raised a total of R48 400. Cars.co.za contributed R5 000 to sponsor the pits for the duration of the race.

The Race

The Wide Horizon Hospice Charity 12 Hour Endurance Race saw a total of 37 teams driving through the night from 8pm to 8am to determine the overall winner for the event.

Celebrity South African female racing sensation, Fabienne Lanz, joined the field to support the worthy cause and at the end of a long night behind the wheel, the following three teams came out on top for this year’s event:

  • Prokart Containerforce finished in first place after completing 670 laps in a winning time of 12:00:47.
  • Second place was awarded to SSS Black Mamba who completed 667 laps in a time of 12:00:48
  • Third place was awarded to F400 LJ 2 who completed 638 laps in a time of 12:01:32.

The Clerk Of Course, Rob Fouche said “I think it was the most people we have ever had on the grid just before the race started, with high-fives going on everywhere and team mates jumping up and down. I had to blow my whistle three times to clear the start grid of all the team mates and enthusiastic fans. Then, as the flag dropped for the start of the race, there was a huge cheer from all the teams and fans once again. I then realized that this series must be one of the best family and friends series there is in South Africa”.

BMW Concept 4 Series Coupe details revealed

BMW has released details of its new Concept 4 Series Coupe, following on from the successful 3 Series Coupe and Convertible. The BMW Concept 4 Series Coupe,  “adds a new dimension to the qualities of the BMW 3 Series Coupe in terms of aesthetics, dynamics and elegance.” The Concept 4 Series Coupe will make its debut in 2013 at the Detroit Motor Show.

BMW Concept 4 Series Coupe is a style master

Unfortunately BMW has not revealed powertrain specifications for the Concept 4 Series Coupe but these details will become available when it makes its debut at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show. However, when compared to the 3 Series Coupe, the Concept 4 Series Coupe has a 50mm longer wheelbase, while the front track has increased by 45mm and the rear by 80mm. The Concept 4 Series Coupe is 1.826m wide which is 44mm wider than the 3 Series Coupe. Its roofline is also 16mm lower at a height of 1.362m and is longer at 4.641m.

From the outside, the Concept 4 Series takes on both elegant and sporty proportions. The front-end features a BMW kidney grille with circular headlights with a slim, sporty design. The kidney grille is closed off to enhance aerodynamics and fuel efficiency and the areas between the satin-finish grille slats are blanked off by dark surfaces. The full-LED headlights are hexagonal in shape and offer a new perspective on BMW’s twin circular headlight design.

The large front air intake in the front apron is an eye-catching feature while the two vent surrounds on either side of the intake replicate the contours of the hexagonal headlights graphics. The intake is finished with three satin-finish trim elements.

At the rear, the stretched tail lights emphasise the width and muscular nature of the Concept 4 Series Coupe. The inner rear-light elements form the BMW signature ‘double L’ in 3-D. The rear bumper, in satin-finish aluminium, defines the rear-end and adopts a similar three-way split like the front air intake and incorporates the two exhaust tailpipes. The exterior is finished in Liquid Metal Silver and was specifically developed for the concept.

Interior styling has the driver in mind

The interior of the Concept 4 Series Coupe is intently focused on the driver with the controls grouped ergonomically around the driver. The interior design takes on a ‘layering’ approach where volumes are arranged into layers with the use of lines and surfaces. This approach underpins the dynamic feel of the Concept 4 Series Coupe’s interior.

This approach is used throughout and continues into the door design, side walls and window sills with lines streaking towards the rear, emphasising the driving cabin. This approach gives passengers the feeling of being in a cocoon while the rear seats appear like two individual seats joined together.

The interior, developed by BMW Individual, features two-tone Black and Schiaparelli Brown leather trim with light contrasting stitching. ‘BMW Individual’ lettering is found on the seats and door sill strips and the seats feature hand-braided leather trim elements which run vertically down the seats, increasing the feeling of class. The leather cup holders and floor mats adopt the same braided theme. The interior is finished off with a Natural Chestnut fine wood trim strip.

The BMW M3 DTM Champion Edition mimics Spengler’s racing car and is finished in Frozen Metallic Black while the carbon flaps and gurney, dark chrome elements, matt black wheels and sections of the race car’s livery portray close links to the winning BMW M3 DTM.

The BMW M3 DTM Champion Edition features a BMW M stripe design over the Carbon Fibre Reinforced-Plastic (CFRP) roof and boot lid with the BMW M logo seen to the rear and front wheel arches and decals in the rear side windows.

On the inside, the door sill strips replicate Spengler’s helmet design while the carbon fibre interior trim strip features Spengler’s signature and the car’s serial number. The interior also features an Alcantara steering wheel, a handbrake lever embroidered with ‘M Power’ lettering and extended black Novillo leather trim with contrasting Palladium Silver features.

Technical elements such as the Competition package, M Drive, M DCT Drivelogic and the M Driver’s Package underpins the high performance credentials of the vehicle. The BMW M3 DTM Champion Edition also features the Professional navigation system, heated seats and Park Distance Control.

The M3 DTM Champion Edition will be available in various markets and owners will have the chance to attend the BMW M Fascination Nordschleife driver training course under the watchful eye of Bruno Spengler at the famous Nürburgring’s Nordschleife track.
