2013 Chevrolet Trailblazer to be launched in South Africa

GM South Africa recently announced that the all-new 2013 Chevrolet Trailblazer would be released in SA before the end of the year. The Trailblazer is a large SUV and will bolster what is an already impressive lineup of vehicles from Chevrolet, who have seen their sales volume grow by more than 50% from 2010 to 2011.

2013 Chevrolet Trailblazer to ruffle SUV feathers

The 2013 Chevrolet Trailblazer made its debut at the Dubai International Motor Show and Chevrolet feel like the vehicle will fit well into the South African market. The Trailblazer is a 7-seater SUV and Chev are noting that it is particularly tough and robust. Seating in the vehicle is more than ample, with an impressive 3rd row of seats. Even with the emphasis on how robust and capable the vehicle is, the Trailblazer still has impressive ride comfort and efficiency and is set to go to battle with the Toyota Fortuner in the segment.

More information and pricing of the vehicle will be available closer to its release date.

Nissan Invitation hatchback concept revealed

Nissan are looking to have a big impact in the B-segment with their latest concept, the Invitation hatch. The Nissan Invitation will be sold alongside the Nissan Micra city car and the increasingly popular Juke crossover. The Nissan Invitation is going to be unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March and is set for a launch in Europe in 2013. Nissan chose the concept name “Invitation” because it embodied the feeling that the car is inviting.

Nissan Invitation comes with fresh design and features

The design of the Nissan Invitation comes with a fresh style, innovation and clean lines which emphasis the cars dynamic potential and aerodynamics. Nissan have called the line along the side of the vehicle the ‘Squash line’, which has added to the vehicles dynamic feel and created a confident stance. The interior is spacious, while many of the components have been made as compact as possible.

Efficiency was a big factor in the design of the Nissan Invitation. The use of advanced engine technologies, a lightweight platform as well as an aerodynamically efficient body ensures that the Invitation is able to achieve class-leading levels of fuel economy and emissions. Nissan are targeting a CO2 emission rating of under 100g/km for the best model in the range.

Safety was another key factor in the design process and Nissan are aiming to use some of the most advanced technology ever used in the B-segment. The Invitation will include Nissan’s advanced Around View Monitor technology which helps with reversing and parallel parking. The car will also incorporate Nissan Safety Shield Technologies which helps keep the driver aware of what is happening around the car.

Look for more information on the Nissan Invitation as it becomes available.

2012 Range Rover Sport Revealed

The latest 2012 Range Rover Sport will see a host of changes and improvements. In brief, the design style of the interior and exterior has been updated, new entertainment options are now available and there is an 825W audio system, as well as a few other features.

Big changes for 2012 Range Rover Sport

The infotainment system has seen quite a big overhaul. The vehicle now comes with a MOST Gen 2.1 electrical architecture to the Hi-ICE and Premium audio infotainment systems. There is connectivity support for DVD audio formats, a Hard Disc Drive Music server, dual tuner, iPod and video streaming via USB as well as audio streaming via Bluetooth. More impressively though, there is now also the option of a dual-view 7-inch touch screen. This allows the driver to view the navigation system while the rest of the vehicle can watch a DVD.

Engine Power

The engine in the new 2012 Range Rover Sport is a 5.0 LR V8 petrol, with the supercharged version producing 375 kW and 625 Nm of torque. The transmission is an ultra-refined ZF HP28 6-speed automatic, and provides class-leading response and rapid refined shifts. For off-road driving, it comes with Hill Start Assist as well as Gradient Acceleration Control which will assist the driver when on steep gradients and slows the vehicle to a limit (set by the throttle position) allowing the driver to gain proper control.

Lastly the CO2 emissions and fuel economy have been further addressed via the e_Terrain Technologies. To achieve this there is a high pressure spray-guided direction injection system as well as engines which have all been optimized for low-end torque and economy. Additional improvements come from the idle speed, which has been reduced to a low 710 rpm at standstill. Lastly there have been some aerodynamic improvements to the vehicle, with a lower chin spoiler and front wheel deflectors which have resulted in less drag.

New Ford B-Max heading for production

The new Ford B-Max will be introduced to the world at the Geneva Motor Show in March before the car goes on sale in Europe later in the year. The B-Max is dubbed as a smart, compact and city-friendly car with a big emphasis on space.

New Ford B-Max is stylish and practical

The concept for the B-Max was revealed last year at the Geneva Motor Show, with the forthcoming show unveiling the production version. Ford have created a car which they believe will cater to a new buyer who is looking for a compact city car, but with many of the features usually reserved for larger vehicles. One such feature is a new approach to door construction, with wide-open access for the drivers, the passengers and their luggage. This wide-access was created by having the centre pillars integrated into the doors. The new B-Max is looking at having class leading load space, thanks in part to flexible seating.

Under the hood the new Ford B-Max will be powered by a new 1.0 litre EcoBoost petrol engine, as well as Duratorq TDCi diesel options. As information becomes available regarding a South African release, we will let you know.

New Nissan GT-R available in South Africa

Known as the supercar-killer, the new Nissan GT-R gets an update for 2012 along with number of improvements. There have been significant improvements to the engine, a rear view camera now comes as standard, the handling has been improved as well as a number of other changes.

Less fuel consumption and more power for new Nissan GT-R

Efficiency has not been forgotten though, with the latest model seeing a reduction in fuel consumption and reduced CO2 emissions. The fuel economy clocks in at 11.8 litres/100km making it the most efficient GT-R to date.

The engine output has increased to 397 kW at 6 400 rpm and a max torque of 628 Nm from 3 200 to 5 800 rpm. The engine response has also been improved on at varying speeds thanks to a number of features that include: Improved intake efficiency, better air flow resistance, improved exhaust emissions efficiency as well as exhaust valve cooling performance.

The body of the new Nissan GT-R has also been worked on to improve handling. Certain areas around the engine compartment and dash panel have been reinforced which has improved the responsiveness of the handling and a greater sense of vehicle grip on the road. The suspension has been set to have a harder spring rate on the left side of the front suspension while the rear suspension has seen the suspension arm installed upwards on the left side and downwards on the right. This has resulted in an imbalanced wheel load while the car is stationary but becomes equalized while driving. The responsiveness is improved as well as creating a smooth ride and improved cornering stability.

New Toyota Avanza in South Africa

The new Toyota Avanza MPV, now in its second generation, will be going on sale in South Africa on the 6th of February 2012 and comes with a host of new improvements. The interior and exterior have both been redesigned, comfort levels are improved, there are new safety features and the fuel economy and CO2 emissions have both been improved.

Fresh look and feel for new Toyota Avanza

The new Toyota Avanza is 20mm longer and 25mm wider which has improved the interior space. The windows are now elongated which gives the impression of one solid piece of glass along the side of the vehicle. The S model as well as the SX will come with 14 inch steel wheels, while the TX model comes with 15 inch alloys. The front of the car is described by Toyota as an “outwardly thrusting snout”, with a body-coloured grille and is the new family face of Toyota.

The interior of the new Toyota Avanza has been designed to feel more like a passenger car than its predecessor. This was achieved thanks to a lowered instrument panel which has improved driver visibility and a centrally located cluster. Occupant luggage space has also been addressed and now all three rows have ample legroom and knee-room. The extra space was created by adjusting the shape and placement of the seatbacks and door trim.

Under the hood, the new Toyota Avanza comes with the choice of a 1.3 or 1.5 litre petrol engine. These engines however are the same engines used in the previous model. However, thanks to aerodynamic improvements, low rolling resistance tyres and a reduction in vehicle weight of around 20kg, the new Avanza has seen a reduction in fuel consumption. The 1.3 litre engine clocks in at around 7.7 litres/100km with the 1.5 auto netting 7.6 litres/100km and the 1.5 manual netting 7.2 litres/100km.

Range Rover Evoque 2,0 Si4 Prestige (2012) Driving Impression

It’s not often that a new car arrives on a wave of such hype and expectation as the new Range Rover Evoque. The anticipation and interest have been such that the bean counters at Jaguar Land Rover’s head offices in England must have already written themselves sizeable bonus cheques. But such hype can also be dangerous. Much of the near fanatical response has had to do with the vehicle’s dramatic show-car looks. But what if it turns out to be poorly build, poor value, and a dynamic turd? Is there really substance to the Range Rover Evoque? Let’s find out…

But first… those looks

When the Range Rover Evoque was first shown as the Land Rover LRX concept car, it received a very enthusiastic response which prompted the company to put it into production nearly as-is. It’s not often that a concept car from a motor show makes it to production without losing any of its sex appeal, but that is exactly what has happened with the Evoque. Drive down any road in one of these, and it attracts plenty of stares. Park it at the mall, and expect a lot of fingerprints on the windows when you return. From the 19-inch wheels to the sexy LED lamps and narrow glass area, the Range Rover Evoque is a very fresh and futuristic take on the compact SUV. Of course, with time and familiarity the Evoque’s attention-grabbing ability will wane, which makes it all the more important to find out whether there is an excellent car underneath the shine.

Some onlookers pointed to the slope of the roof and the relatively short body, suggesting that interior packaging would be compromised by the glitzy looks. In reality, however, the cabin is surprisingly spacious. Firstly, the car’s exterior design actually hides its true size. The wheelbase measures 2 660 mm and it stands broad-shouldered (1 965 mm) on those big wheels. The five-door Range Rover Evoque model also has a slightly different roof curvature, to ensure enough headroom for rear passengers. So, leg-room is actually pretty good all-round. The only compromise, really, is the boot – it’s not only small, it also lacks a full-size spare wheel.

In terms of aesthetic appeal the cabin is a pace-setter, too. The materials are first-class, with soft leather on many of the surfaces and convincing materials used throughout. Range Rover has been very good in recent years with combining traditional materials with high-tech equipment, and the Evoque is no different. What it adds, however, is greater simplicity. The striking centre console and transmission tunnel appears remarkably free of clutter – the gearlever is replaced by the rotary selector first seen on the Jaguar XF; there is an electric park brake; and the Terrain Response function is taken care of by a simple row of buttons.

Due to the emphasis on sportiness, as well as the narrow window area, there is the sensation of sitting quite low in the Evoque, which is a first for a Range Rover. Combine this with the low-slung roof, and some occupants may feel a bit “boxed-in”, but Range Rover has an elegant solution to this – a fixed panoramic roof lets a lot of light into the cabin, and even makes the cabin feel more spacious.

The panoramic roof is but one nice-to-have feature on a very long standard features list that includes climate control, auto lights, xenon lamps, auto wipers, radio/CD with Bluetooth, cruise control, keyless entry, a rear-view camera and even an electric tailgate. The safety package adds seven airbags, park assist, and an electronic stability system.

On-road bias

Look, if you think the Range Rover Evoque was designed to see a lot of muddy action, you’re sorely mistaken. Still, the Terrain Response system is fitted, and there are hill-descent and hill-start functions too. We suspect, however, that most buyers will be quite tempted to tick the box that adds a sport mode to the system. Sport mode sharpens up the dynamics for superior road holding by using magnetic particles to stiffen the dampers. It does help the already impressive Evoque to corner with a lot of poise for a compact SUV. And if you’re worried that the on-road bias and big wheels have resulted in a bone-crushing ride quality, don’t be – the Evoque uses a modified version of the Freelander’s suspension, and it has retained a lot of that Land Rover’s trademark suppleness.

While most customers are likely to opt for a turbodiesel engine, the Evoque’s 2,0-litre turbocharged engine is a good – if thirsty – match for the underpinnings. It delivers a meaty 177 kW and 340 Nm of torque. The torque is already on tap below 2 000 rpm, and consequently the Evoque feels lively from low speeds. As usual, the Land Rover engineers have done a sterling job with this model’s throttle mapping – it responds very keenly to driver inputs, even when you’re not in Sport mode. Similarly, the six-speed automatic transmission is a good one. Left to its own devices it does its job efficiently and unobtrusively. Use Sport mode or even the paddles behind the steering wheel, and it really helps the driver to engage with this machine.

Range Rover Evoque – Verdict

Given the Evoque’s striking design and resultant desirability, being merely an average product would have been good enough to secure it a few years of excellent sales. But this Range Rover is far from an average product. Take away the glitz and glamour and you still have one of the best luxury crossovers around. The standard specification is class-leading, the build quality excellent, the interior reasonably spacious and the driving experience (on tar) is very good, too. Yes it is pricey, but those who take the plunge are unlikely to be disappointed.

Also consider:

  • BMW X3 xDrive20i M Sport SteptronicThe new X3 is a significantly better offering than its predecessor, and more spacious than the Evoque. On the downside, it is neither as powerful, nor as well-equipped. A more direct rival (the xDrive25i) comes a bit later.
  • Audi Q3 2,0 TFSI Quattro S-tronic: Audi’s very popular Q5 offers a cheaper alternative. While you do sacrifice a few features (and, of course, the looks of the Evoque), the Q5 nevertheless is good to drive with standard quattro all-wheel drive and a dual-clutch transmission.
  • Volvo XC60 T6 Excel Geartronic: Don’t underestimate this very good Volvo. Sure, the resale value will be atrocious, and the fuel consumption will bankrupt you first, but it’s such a comfortable, fast, practical and likeable machine to drive, you can just about forgive it anything.

Volkswagen UP 5-door set for production

The Volkswagen UP  5-door has just been confirmed for production. Good news is that the 5-door version is only slightly more expensive than the current 2-door version; the price has been kept in check. The new Volkswagen UP will be hitting European dealerships throughout the course of the year.

Volkswagen UP 5-door may be more popular

VW are predicting that over half of people who purchase the new UP will favour the 4-door version as it maintains many of the specifications that come on the 2 door model. The 4-door model, as you would expect, comes with a different side profile as well as a bootlid whose outer skin is made up of a continuous glass surface. The boot has a 251 litre cargo capacity which can be extended to 951 litres by folding the rear backrests down.

The Volkswagen UP 4-door version will also come with the same impressive spacious interior that the 2-door has. The rear seats also have a higher seating position which gives the rear passengers a better view over the shoulders of the driver and front passenger. Legroom and headroom has also been maintained and should be more than adequate for the size of the car.

As any additional information becomes available on the Volkswagen UP, we will let you know.
