Hyundai i40 sedan revealed

The Hyundai i40 sedan is specifically designed for the European market and will have its official debut at the Barcelona Motor Show. After which the 4.74 metre long saloon will go on sale in the 4th quarter of 2011 in Europe. The Hyundai i40 sedan represents the next evolution of Hyundai’s unique design language, ‘fluidic sculpture’.

New design philosophy for Hyundai i40 sedan

The ‘fluidic sculpture’ design DNA is recognisable by flowing lines inspired by nature which combine to create a dynamic exterior, and was introduced on the Hyundai ix-onic concept car at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show. Since this debut, ‘fluidic sculpture’ has been the design inspiration behind all new Hyundai models, such as the award-winning ix35, ix20 and Veloster.

The all-new Hyundai i40 sedan will be available with a choice of four Euro V-compliant engines: two petrol and two diesel. These units cover a power spread of 115 ps to 177 ps, with torque delivery extended across a wide engine-speed range, making the i40 an enjoyable car to drive around town or on the motorway. Manual and automatic transmissions will also be offered.

Hyundai’s all new four-cylinder 2-litre GDI engine, called ‘Nu’, makes its debut in the i40. It delivers higher torque for enhanced driving pleasure, improved fuel economy and reduced emissions and excellent NVH characteristics – similar to the multi-point fuel injected engine.

Equipped with GDI (gasoline direct injection) this 1,999 cc unit generates 177 ps and 213 Nm of torque, ensuring that the i40 brings a good balance between performance and fuel economy. An i40 saloon with this engine and a six-speed manual gearbox will accelerate to 62 mph in just 9,7 seconds, record fuel economy figures of 41.5 mpg (combined cycle) and achieve a CO2 rating of just 159 g/km.

Hyundai i40 sedan is packed with features

By offering an extensive standard specification with numerous high-tech features, the high level of equipment in the Hyundai i40 sedan promises to be one of its key attractions to potential buyers.

High-tech features include smart-parking assist and lane departure warning system, as well as connectivity items like Bluetooth® with voice recognition and full map navigation with rear view camera. In terms of comfort and convenience, the i40 will be available with an electric parking brake, front air ventilation seats, heated and reclining rear seats, as well as new features for the segment like auto-defog system, and a heated steering wheel.

Volkswagen Golf GTI Edition 35 is a stunner

It’s the 35th anniversary of the Volkswagen Golf GTI and to celebrate, VW have created a special edition to honour this classic vehicle. Volkswagen practically invented the sports hatch in 1976 and have a long history of quality which the ‘Edition35’ will surely continue.

Volkswagen Golf GTI Edition 35 gets more power and style

The Volkswagen Golf GTI Edition 35 comes with a number of features to separate it from the current Golf GTI. The front bumper has been upgraded and given a new design as well as the wheels which have received the special edition treatment. The performance in the Edition 35 has also been upgraded, gaining an extra 25 hp compared to the current Golf GTI, topping off at 235 hp. Perhaps the most significant and unique feature of the Edition 35 is the text “35” which will appear on the fender, on the door sills, the head restraints as well as the centre of the seats.

There is no word yet on a South African release of this special edition but the Volkswagen Golf GTI Edition 35 goes on sale in Germany in mid June, with base price of 30 425 Euros.

2012 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster to be shown

The 2012 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster is only set to make it’s world premier at the Frankfurt/Main International Motor Show in September, but pictures and information of the vehicle testing have already been released.

2012 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster improved

The gull-wing doors and the fixed roof have obviously been dropped which had lead to certain challenges and increased testing for the Merc designers.

Being a soft-top one of the biggest challenges was bodyshell rigidity and the handling of the vehicle, as well as providing the same superior driving dynamics experienced in the coupe’ version. “Without bodyshell rigidity there are no handling dynamics, and neither can the close fit of the soft top be guaranteed” comments Tobias Moers, head of development.

Mercedes tackled this problem with the following two features that would ultimately increase the rigidity of the bodyshell: Firstly the cross-member carrying the dashboard has additional supporting struts at the windscreen frame and centre tunnel. Secondly, the strut mounting stay between the soft top and the fuel tank has improved the rigidity of the rear axle. This has led to a reduction in vibration, as well as allowing the top to be safely opened and closed while driving up to 50km/h.

New Alfa Romeo MiTo Range Launched

The new Alfa Romeo  MiTo range has been re-designed to be far more accessible, attractive and simple. They have done this by reducing the number of variant options to choose from, as well as reducing the price and simplifying things all-round. Currently there are 17 MiTo versions available and this can obviously be confusing to a buyer and make it difficult to know which to choose from as well as even knowing what the differences between the models even are.

Less options but more engines for new Alfa Romeo MiTo

The MiTo sports compact range has been refined to 9 models; the Turismo and Lusso variants have been replaced with the Sprint, with the entry level version now called the Progression. The Veolce and Cloverleaf variants have been replaced by the Distinctive and Quadrifoglio Verde.

There are also 3 new engine options available. First up there is a 1.4 litre engine that produces 78hp which is low on CO2 emissions and fuel consumption, with StartStop as standard. Secondly there is a 1.4 litre MultiAir engine that produces 105hp for improved performance. Lastly there is a 1.3 JTDM-2 (only available in the Sprint option) which produces 85hp but importantly clocks in at 95g/km of CO2 emission, which means it falls under the CO2 tax bracket.

These are some welcome changes and should make the decision when buying a new Alfa Romeo MiTo a lot easier. Lastly there is also a new paint option; Metal Bronze. This new Alfa Romeo MiTo range will be available in the UK next month but should be hitting South African dealerships soon after that.

Volkswagen Golf 6 1,4 TSI Trendline (2011) Driving Impression

While it is usually the flagship models of the automotive world that grab the headlines and make the cover pages, it is quite often the case that the best example of a particular model range can be found among the cheaper versions. Does this hold true for the generally highly regarded Volkswagen Golf 6, however? After all, in the recent past entry level Golf variants have not exactly represented outstanding value…

At first glance the specification sheet of the “second-from-the-bottom” Golf 1,4 TSI Trendline doesn’t look particularly promising. There are cloth seats, manual rear window winders, no front foglamps and even black exterior door handles and mirror housings. These are nice-to- rather than must-haves, certainly, but the fact is that the competition generally does better. Instead of frills, however, Volkswagen’s product planners appear to have prioritised safety. The Volkswagen Golf 6 1,4 TSI Trendline features no fewer than seven airbags, disc brakes all-round, ABS with EBD, an electronic stability programme (ESP) and Isofix child seat mounting points at the rear.

Premium ambience in Volkswagen Golf 6

So while it is true that there are few surprises in terms of creature comforts, this is not to say the Golf’s cabin is bare-boned – far from it, in fact. This German marque just knows how to design an interior. It starts with generous rake and reach adjustment from the steering wheel, as well as height adjustment for the driver’s seat. The seats themselves are simply superb, with just enough side bolstering and cushions that are neither too soft, nor overly firm. Long-distance drives in the latest Volkswagen Golf 6 is superbly relaxing as a result.

It is on such longer drives that other traits of this particular model are highlighted, and they’re all positive. The refinement is impressive. The engine, a 90 kW turbocharged 1,4-litre, delivers its power smoothly and strongly from low down in the rev range, without making a big fuss in terms of noise. Yet it revs sweetly and easily all the way to the red line. The ride quality is almost certainly unmatched in this segment, even by the French. The Golf’s multi-link rear suspension plays a big role here, and so do the plump, high-profile tyres that are so often sneered at these days. At cruising speed the Volkswagen Golf 6 is simply impeccably refined, with low levels of wind, road and mechanical noise. In fact, it feels like a car from a premium segment.

Given the fact that the basics of what makes a car comfortable are certainly very much evident in this Golf, it therefore becomes understandable that Volkswagen has kept the interior specification rather basic. Remember, that multi-link suspension doesn’t come cheaply… Undoubtedly further adding to the cost of producing the Golf is the quality of the materials used in its cabin. Much of the facia features soft-touch plastics, and the satin-silver trim detailing looks convincing. Regularly touched surfaces have a quality feel to them and overall the cabin appears more upmarket than anything else in this segment. Quality costs money, and the Volkswagen Golf 6, even in Trendline form, comes across as a premium product.

Nevertheless, in addition to its superior quality, comfort and safety, the Golf Trendline still offers a radio/CD/MP3 system, manual air-conditioning, electric mirrors and power front windows, so there’s not much reason to complain. Besides, Volkswagen offers a long options list if you really must…

If there is one area in which the Volkswagen Golf 6 is bested by most of its rivals, it is in cabin space. Rear legroom is about average for this segment, but the boot is probably short of that marker, which is a pity given the Golf’s cruising abilities and subsequent appeal as a family car.

Around town

Thankfully, the Volkswagen Golf 6 isn’t a one-trick pony. It is a superb car around town as well, to a large degree because the engine and six-speed transmission work very well together. The gearing seems to complement the engine’s smooth and strong power delivery, making it seem almost more powerful than it is, but always refined. Furthermore, it has to be said that many cars get high-speed ride quality right, only to be bumpy at lower speeds. The Golf, however, is as impressive going slowly as it is going fast. The refinement is always there, which is quite an amazing feat for a near entry level C-segment hatchback.

But wait, it gets even better. If you’re expecting the Volkswagen Golf 6 Trendline to be a bit of a dullard when pressing on, you’d be wrong. Surprisingly this model is not averse to entertaining an enthusiastic driver with good steering, excellent body control and surprising grip. Yes, it is even fun to drive when the mood grabs you. A complete package then? You betcha!

Volkswagen Golf 6 – Verdict

The Volkswagen Golf 6 1,4 TSI Trendline is proof that you don’t need to break the bank to buy a classy, premium product that excels on all fronts. It may lack a few mod-cons, and yes, the boot could be bigger, but this is one of those rare cars that appear to be more than the sum of its parts. With all the fripperies of the higher-spec models stripped away, what is left is the core, the essence, of the Volkswagen Golf 6. And it is brilliant.

We like:

  • Cabin quality
  • Classy design
  • Refinement
  • Fuel economy
  • Resale value

We don’t like:

  • Small boot
  • A few missing creature comforts
  • Uhm…

Also consider:

  • Opel Astra 1,4T Enjoy: A really smart competitor, but it doesn’t really beat the Volkswagen Golf 6 in any specific area, except for claimed fuel consumption. More expensive than the Golf new, Opel’s traditionally steeper depreciation should see it becoming quite an attractive used buy, especially as it has a long warranty and service plan.
  • Ford Focus 1,8 Si: Not really a front runner in this segment, due to its hit-and-miss facia design and finish and comparatively high fuel consumption. It’s a nice car to drive, however, with an excellent balance of ride comfort and engaging dynamics.
  • Toyota Auris XR: A considerably better car than most think, with excellent refinement and a beautifully finished interior. Loaded with safety specification (7 airbags) and should be just about bullet-proof. Pity about the dowdy looks.

New VW Beetle goes back in time

It’s been a long time coming and after all the teaser videos and Oprah giveaways, the new Volkswagen Beetle has finally been revealed. VW chose the Shanghai Motor Show as the first stop in the reveal, with the New York Motor Show to follow. With all the hype that has been building up around the new Beetle, VW have a tough time on their hands to live up to it.

New VW Beetle based on the classic

VW have gone back to their roots for the new generation Beetle, taking design cues from the original Beetle, released over 73 years ago, as apposed to the previous Beetle released in 1998. In that regard, the new generation Beetle is longer, wider and lower which creates a more “masculine” appearance. The new VW Beetle is also a lot more practical, with 309 litres of boot space and 4 seats, with a split-fold rear seat for further utility.

Under the hood, the UK version of the new VW Beetle comes with 4 engines to choose from including a 1.2 litre TSI, a 1.4 litre TSI, a 2.0 litre PS and a 1.6 litre BlueMotion diesel engine. VW have included Stop/Start technology and battery regeneration in the 1.6-litre which gives it an estimated fuel consumption of 4.3 litres / 100km and a CO2 emission rating of 112g/km.

The new VW Beetle goes on sale in the States in their autumn of this year, with a release in mainland Europe in early 2012. No word is out on a local release yet, but it will likely be soon after it arrives in Europe.

Mercedes-Benz A-Class has bright future

A glimpse of the future of the Mercedes-Benz A-Class will be shown at the 2011 New York Auto Show and the 2012 Shanghai Auto Show in the form of the Concept A.  The Concept A is an over-styled version of what the 2012 A-Class will look like. And while it is a rather large departure from the current A-Class, the final release version will no doubt be a lot tamer than the incredible images Mercedes-Benz have presented us with in the Concept A.

Mercedes-Benz A-Class to be better than ever before

The Concept A is front-wheel drive and is powered by a direct-injection, turbo-charged 4-cylinder 2 litre engine which pumps out 210hp. The engine is a BlueEFFICIENCY which should result in some impressive fuel consumption figures and low emissions.

Such a fancy concept car would be nothing without some innovation on the inside. The Mercedes-Benz Concept A comes with a radar-based collision warning system that is linked to the adaptive Brake Assist which is a world first in the compact class. The system aims to lower the risk of rear-end collisions by providing a visual and sound warning and will prepare the Brake Assist for precise braking as the driver operates the brake pedal.

Looks-wise the Concept A has a much more aggressive appearance, especially when compared to the current Mercedes-Benz A-Class which looks rather “Soccer-mom” like. Mercedes credit “the wind and the waves” for the design inspiration of the A Concept, with its long hood, low silhouette and interplay of its lines. The front grille is probably the most striking element of the car and is described by Mercedes as “a star-filled sky”, this theme is repeated in the design of the wheels. It certainly looks flash but you cannot help but feel that it will be the first feature to be cut once the 2012 Mercedes-Benz A-Class hits production.

The Concept A will be debuting soon, so check back for full details when they are available.

Full steam ahead for the new car market

The new car market has been on the up for a while now, not only here in South Africa but in the United States as well. With many car manufacturers posting incredible sales results for March, it seems the worst is behind us.

In the U.S. it was 2 of the usual suspects who came out strong, as well as an unlikely Korean manufacturer. Audi North America completed the month sales with the company’s best ever March and the best first quarter ever. Not to be out-done, Volkswagen America posted their strongest sales month in 7 years. The strongest player for VW was the Jetta, which sold 16 969 models. Also coming in with a strong month of sales in the U.S. was Kia, who achieved an all-time sales record for March and also saw their best ever first quarter sales.

Back at home, the South African car market showed some impressive sales figures as well, with the most usual of suspects taking the number 1 spot in the passenger car market.
