Volvo V40 D2 Elite Review

Volvo is attempting to attack the luxury compact market with the new Volvo V40 and considering the high standard of the mostly German opposition, the Swedes will have had to produce an exceptional vehicle.

Volvo V40 D2 Elite Review by David Taylor

Non-conformist looks are a winner

Looks-wise, I think the Volvo V40 is very attractive. It still has the spunky and uniqueness of the C30 hatchback, yet has elements of maturity that will appeal to older fans of the Volvo brand. If there’s one word to describe the V40’s looks is that it’s interesting. The rear is dominated by some crazy and unorthodox angles and when viewed from the side, looks quite unique.

Small and extremely frugal engine

Powering the Volvo V40 D2 is a 1.6-litre four cylinder turbocharged engine. It has 84kW and 270Nm which isn’t too bad on paper. While it may feel sluggish on pull away due to a small bit of turbo lag, the engine soon comes on song. The real strength of this engine is in-gear acceleration such as when you’re getting onto a highway or trying to overtake when you’re doing 80km/h. It does feel like it runs out of puff after 3500rpm but with this engine, the car doesn’t need to be revved too get the best of it as power is available from low down. Most times I found myself changing gear around the 2800rpm mark and there was still power.

Effortless cruising results in amazing economy

Open cruising is where you’ll find the Volvo V40 D2 to be extremely light on fuel. When I switched on the cruise control at the national speed limit, the vehicle was returning instant figures of 4L/100km – a fantastic result considering the ever-increasing fuel price. The car also features Start/Stop technology and the D2’s engine switches off when you put the car out of gear at the traffic lights. During the test period, my Volvo V40 returned a figure of 6.1L/100km and I’m sure that it would improve over time to under the 5L/100km mark.

Impressive levels of comfort

The drive is quite relaxed and is one of those cars that doesn’t numb your bum after a few hours. Great care has been taken in ensuring that the Volvo V40 is as comfortable and as practical as possible. Despite being marketed as an eco executive luxury car, it has a great chassis and the V40 felt solid and planted on a winding road. The gearbox is solid and slick as you work your way through the ratios. The downside of driving the Volvo V40 enthusiastically is you’ll forget you’re in a diesel and suddenly there’ll be no grunt as the powerband is quite small. Change down a gear and the urge returns.

Pay extra for the Elite model, it’s worth every cent

In terms of specification, the ‘Elite’ trim gets you substantially more cool stuff. Whereas the base model D2 retails for R283 200, your R315 200 may sound excessive but in actual fact, this is what you want. There’s an all-digital dashboard. No more analogue dials as everything is presented to you in a clear and futuristic manner. There are even themes which shift readouts around and add in rich colours. Put it in Sport mode and the main readout shows you the rev counter and speedo in a bright red. Switch to Eco and you’ll see the rev counter be replaced by a big speedo as well as an economical driving indicator appear in a Tron-like eerie green. It’s all very fancy and I love it.

Fully kitted out already but these extras are worth it

As for the other extras for your extra money; there are headlights that turn as you go around a bend, daytime running lights, leather-covered electronically adjustable seats with memory, cruise control, rain-sensitive wipers, rear park assist as well as a better audio system that features streaming. Should you fork out extra for these? Absolutely. Rear park assist is useful as is cruise control.

Near-German levels of quality

In terms of build quality and practicality, the Volvo V40 is impressive. While it may feel a little on the snug side in the back for the tallest of adults, there’s plenty of space for the little ones. The materials used have a distinctly premium feel to them and there’s extensive use of high-quality plastics. You could be fooled into thinking you were in an expensive German vehicle…

Volvo V40 – Conclusion

Honestly, this is one of the finest Volvo vehicles in years and the V40 should become a best-seller for the brand. Model-wise, the D2 is a complete package. It combines a distinct upmarket feel, with a thrifty engine, revered Volvo safety features and modern, fresh 21st-century looks. Even though it’s the baby of the range and there are petrol options as well as a more powerful diesel motor, do you honestly need more car?

  • Why you should: Looks great, economical, comfortable, impressive specification levels, value for money.
  • Why you shouldn’t: It takes time to learn the Volvo quirks, check the options lists carefully – things can work out quite expensive if you get tick-happy.
  • It would be better if: The key still looks cheap and nasty after all these years, the vast range of options were trimmed.

Citroen South Africa enters minibus taxi market

Citroen South Africa has announced its entrance to the local market for minibus’ with a range of 15-, 16- and 19-seater Relay buses.

“We are already encouraged with our success in the 2012 government tender and have, to date, supplied 45 diesel-engined 16- and 19-seater minibuses to government agencies including the SA Police Service, Legal Aid and Water Affairs,” says National Fleet and Business-to-Business Manager, Khyl Reddy.

“We are expecting to sell many more vehicles via the government tender and are aiming to sell about 1000 minibuses in South Africa this year,“ he added.

Citroen Relay Minibus in South Africa

Manufactured in Italy, the Citroen Relay panel vans are then shipped to France which in turn exports them to South Africa where Bustruck Conversions converts them according to the SA Government regulations for minibus taxis. These regulations include the proper fitting of windows, a strengthened floor, seat belts and radios.

The 15 and 16-seater models are fitted with 2.2-litre engines, while the 19-seater boasts a 3-litre power unit. The 15-seater is mated to a five speed manual gearbox while the 16 and 19-seater models are mated to a six speed transmission. Mazda BT-50 Double-Cab 2,2 SLE 4×2 (2013) Driving Impression

With Ford’s macho new Ranger pick-up already doing brisk business in South Africa and dominating the headlines, Mazda’s spin-off BT-50 model faces an uphill battle to get its share of the limelight. Mazda’s product planners would’ve known that the Ford would be quite a groundbreaking new product, so perhaps this is the reason why the new BT-50 is such a radical design. According to Mazda, the new bakkie had to have a personality that was noticeably different to the Ford’s, inside and out. They’ve certainly achieved that… but, have they gone too far?

Controversial styling

Like the Ranger with which it shares its underpinnings, the Mazda BT-50 is a very large, very imposing vehicle that stretches the tape to 5 365 mm in length. But its size is not the first thing you will notice about it. The Mazda BT-50 looks, erm… strange. Its large V-shaped grille is flanked by aggressively slanted headlamps that flow into the front fenders. The curves continue along the sides of the vehicle and at the rear… well, here Mazda has really thrown caution to the wind with some very quirky tail lamps. Some onlookers commented that the big Mazda BT-50 resembled a SsangYong. This was not meant as a compliment…

There are no such bizarre design features in the spacious cabin. In fact, if anything, Mazda has managed to beat its Blue Oval counterpart when it comes to the general design and layout of the controls. The BT-50’s cabin architecture reminds a lot of the brand’s “6” sedan, with a very neatly integrated audio system, digital display on the top of the facia and deep-set, sporty instrumentation that brings some zoom-zoom spirit in the bakkie’s cabin. It is however quite a dark cabin, with little brightwork to break the monotony of the blacks and dark greys. And in some areas the plastic quality could be improved.

As you’d expect from such a large vehicle, there’s no lack of passenger space. Rear legroom is excellent and the seats are among the more comfortable you’re likely to find in a double-cab. But considering this BT-50’s likely leisure/family role, it was strange to find that the middle rear passenger is provided only with a lap belt, and that there are no Isofix rear child seat mounts – the latter is a particularly strange omission given the otherwise high safety spec, which includes six airbags.

Other standard features include climate control, electric windows/mirrors all-round, radio/CD system with USB/aux-in support and Bluetooth, cruise control, rear park sensors, a neat multi-function steering wheel and leather upholstery. Pity the steering wheel only offers rake adjustability.

Impressive engine

The BT-50 is powered by the same impressive 2,2-litre “high-output”, four-cylinder turbodiesel engine as used in the Ford Ranger. It delivers 110 kW and a meaty 375 Nm of torque (from only 1 500 rpm). Still, the BT-50 is a heavy machine that weighs nearly two tonnes, so it needs all of that grunt. Power goes to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual transmission. A rear differential lock is offered.

As described before in the Ford, the 2,2-litre engine is an impressive one that make you wonder whether the 3,2-litre is worth the extra money. It provides ample performance, good overtaking grunt and is also reasonably economical (expect to achieve around 9 L/100 km). In this Mazda, however, the transmission was not as refined as it could be, and some noises could be heard in the drivetrain. This, however, could well have been unique to our test vehicle.

Ready for work and play

The BT-50’s high ground clearance (237 mm) and big body make it quite an intimidating vehicle to drive at first. The rear park sensors go some way to lowering stress levels, but initially one is very conscious of its size. After a while, however, the high seating position does make one feel invincible, which is quite enjoyable. With its nicely weighted steering assistance the BT-50 is actually quite easy to drive, even around town.

It does, however, feel noticeably firmer than an Amarok, and possibly also firmer than a Ranger, which is somewhat strange. It’s not quite as bone-jarring as a Hilux, though. As ever, putting some weight on the back actually makes the ride less bouncy. On one longer distance trip with five occupants and some weight on the back, the BT-50 felt very much like the upmarket leisure tool it is made out to be.

Mazda BT-50 – Verdict

Has Mazda managed to give its BT-50 a unique personality? Is it a sufficiently different proposition to the Ranger? Very possibly, yes. Firstly, you can’t really confuse the two anymore (unlike previous generation models), and the Mazda BT-50 has in particular a very good cabin. The engine is, of course, just as good as it is in the Ford, and the rest of the drivetrain should be, too (even if our test car’s wasn’t). In the end, it will come down to whether you actually like the looks (more than the Ranger’s). That’s a tough one…

We like:

  • Individualistic looks
  • Interior design
  • Standard features
  • Cabin space

We don’t like:

  • Individualist looks
  • Drivetrain refinement
  • No rear Isofix

Also consider:

  • Ford Ranger Double-Cab 2,2 XLS: The Mazda’s biggest problem is the vehicle it is based upon – the Ford Ranger. While the Mazda offers a few more features, its questionable looks and different driving feel diminish its appeal.
  • Volkswagen Amarok 2,0 TDI Trendline: The Amarok is pricier and lacks the Ford/Mazda duo’s power and features, but nevertheless is probably the most comfortable bakkie on the road today. An exceptional first effort.
  • Toyota Hilux 2,5 D-4D Raised Body Raider: The Hilux is quite an expensive offering but very popular. It boasts the new high-output 2,5-litre engine that delivers exceptional performance/economy/refinement. Plus, it has that reputation for indestructibility. The standard features list is long, too.
