Land Rover has introduced the new Range Rover Sport at the New York Auto Show and describes the new model as the fastest, most agile and responsive car the brand has ever made. The new Range Rover Sport features an all-new aluminium unibody structure which reduces weight significantly and was developed alongside the 2013 Range Rover.

New Range Rover Sport – Specification and Features

Engine Capability

The new Range Rover Sport will be available with two engines upon its official launch with options including a supercharged 5.0-litre V8 petrol engine producing 375kW of power with a 0-100km/h sprint time of 5 seconds. A 3.0-litre diesel engine is also available delivering 215kW and can accelerate from 0-100km/h in 6.9 seconds.

Both engines are mated to an electronically controlled ZF 8HP70 8-speed automatic gearbox with stop/start function.

Fuel consumption has been cut by 24% and CO2 emissions reduced to 194g/km. Fuel consumption is reduced by means of a comprehensive selection of fuel saving technologies including the Stop/Start system, smart regenerative charging, high-pressure direct injection, low-friction designs and low viscosity transmission fluids.

Also, a hybrid and two diesel engines including a 3.0-litre TDV6 and a high performance 4.4-litre SDV8 diesel engine are said to follow in 2014.

Exterior Styling Features

The exterior of the new Range Rover Sport features a host of key weight saving technologies which include all-aluminium door construction, high-strength aluminium side intrusion beams, an all-new front and rear suspension design with aluminium front and rear sub frames, damper and anti-roll bar designs.

In addition, the aluminium final drive units and driveline components include new single-speed 4WD system with a Torsen differential, while a high precision magnesium casting has been used for the cross car beam and front-end carrier.

Interior Styling Features

The interior is spacious and comes fitted with 14-way power adjustable front seats with new features including climate control, adjustable bolsters and winged headrests. The rear seats now offer adjustable recline and climate control, with a 60/40 split, while the 5+2 third-row seating is available as an option.

Entertainment comes in the form of a Rear Seat Entertainment (RSE) package which includes twin video screens, a dedicated remote control, and ‘White Fire’ infrared wireless digital headphones. The main instrument cluster consists of clear analogue gauges with a 5-inch TFT display accompanied by an 8-inch high-resolution touch screen display on the centre console for infotainment and secondary functions.

Other interior features include LED ambient lighting in various colours, a powered tailgate, keyless entry and start system, soft door close, power operated child locks, a Centre Console Cooler, and a heated front windshield, seats, and steering wheel.

Optional Features

The new Range Rover Sport will come in a range of optional features including 11 interior colour themes, as well as additional choice of seat colour, 4 aluminium interior finishes, 3 real wood veneers, 3 headliner colours, 19 exterior paint finishes, 3 contrast roof colours – Corris Grey, Santorini Black or Indus Silver, Atlas Silver, Dark Atlas or Gloss Black finish for the exterior accents and Illuminated side sills. Wheel options range from 19-22 inches.

“The new Range Rover Sport is a vehicle that has been designed and engineered without compromise. With Land Rover capability at its heart, it is one of the most road focused vehicles we’ve ever produced, but of course still offers unsurpassed all-terrain capability. It is a vehicle which is designed to be driven. We’ve taken ride, handling and agility to another level for Land Rover to deliver a truly rewarding, sporting, drive together with unmatched luxury, capability and versatility,” said Land Rover Global Brand Director John Edwards.

He added “Building on the success of the recently launched flagship Range Rover, the new Range Rover Sport also employs a vast array of new technologies which help to transform its performance, refinement and all round capabilities.”

Honda Brio 1.2 Review

Honda’s all-new city car takes the fight to the entry level market with an exceptional offering. Everyone, meet the Honda Brio.

People all give me the same reaction when I tell them what I do. “What’s the fastest/most expensive/rarest car you’ve driven?” is the question I get asked the most. While I have been exceptionally fortunate to drive the cool stuff and I do get very excited when something fast and pricey comes my way, I do enjoy driving the working class cars. These cars have the tough challenge of being able to offer a great driving experience, while still being reliable and cheap to run.

Honda Brio 1.2 Review by David Taylor

Honda enters budget market

The Honda Brio is an important vehicle for the Japanese car maker. From recent sales figures, it’s clear that the Korean pair of Kia and Hyundai are hurting Honda. Pity, as Honda makes some good products and has a great track record. The Honda Brio is an entry level vehicle – designed to be affordable, yet has a personality and some funkiness about it.

Mixed opinions regarding looks

In terms of looks, the Honda Brio is rather interesting. From the front it’s pleasant, well-designed and appealing. However, the rear looks a little awkward. Looks are opinionated and despite my feelings about the back of the car, most onlookers thought the Brio was cute. My evaluation unit was a vibrant red, which probably helped with the cute factor. As far as entry-level city cars goes, I’d rate the Honda Brio as the most attractive.

Honda Brio engine offers good performance

Powering the Honda Brio is a little 1.2-litre four cylinder. It has a power output of 65kW and 109Nm which isn’t much, but when the car weighs just 916kg, you realise that the car is quite zippy to drive. With all Hondas you need to give it a bit of a rev to get the best out of it, and I felt that the Brio enjoyed being driven enthusiastically. With such a small engine, fuel economy is great. Honda claims 5.6L/100km, and I reckon I was sitting at about 6L/100km. The car will assist you to drive responsibly as there’s an ECO light which come on when you’re light on the accelerator.

Brio has everything you’d need

TheHonda Brio costs R120 000 and for that price you’re probably thinking that there’s nothing cool about the interior. You’d be wrong as Honda has done well in ensuring that this little city car is modern. You get electric windows all round, air conditioner, power steering, USB/aux connectivity for the audio system, steering wheel radio controls and dual front airbags. There are even ABS brakes. For just under R120 000 you’re getting a lot of kit for not a lot of money and Honda is to be commended for that.

The cabin is larger than you think

The downside is that the interior quality isn’t up to that of something like a Civic. This is a cheap car and it feels like it, due to the quality of some of the plastics. Do I care? Not a chance. Despite the minor quality issues, I was impressed with the actual space inside the Brio. Four tall people are comfortable in the cabin with head room and leg room being in abundance. The boot is a little on the small side, but you can fold down the rear seats for added carrying capacity. It also has an abundance of large cup holders, which are useful for holding keys and smartphones.

Honda Brio – Conclusion

Thanks to the revvy engine and small size, the Honda Brio is perfect in the narrow, traffic-infested roads. The steering is light and the little Honda zips around town. It is also incredibly easy to park thanks to great visibility and the small dimensions. For me the Honda Brio is fantastic. If you’re a student or first-time car owner you can’t go wrong with this. Coupled with the legendary Honda reliability, after-sales service and warranty, the Brio is an excellent candidate for being one of the top urban runabouts.

  • Why you should: effortless to park in the city, light on fuel, fun to drive, well-specced, value-for-money offering
  • Why you shouldn’t: boot is a little small, interior feels cheap, second-hand Honda Jazz may be of interest.
  • It would be better if: The rear end was altered to be better looking and the boot capacity extended.

Mercedes-Benz ML 250 BlueTec 4Matic 7G-tronic (2013) Driving Impression

It may not seem like that long ago that the thought of a primarily road-biased luxury SUV from Mercedes-Benz was seen as a trifle far-fetched, but believe it or not, the ML-class is already in its third generation. These days, of course, it doesn’t only have to compete with the BMW X5, but just about every manufacturer has jumped onto the bandwagon, including Porsche with its Cayenne. While there is no argument that the second-generation ML remained a strong competitor right up to the time of its replacement, we wonder whether this third-generation ML 250 version moves the game on by a big enough step.

Subtler design approach

Whereas its predecessor was quite a muscular-looking SUV with squared-off detailing, the new Mercedes ML offers a less expressive design with softer contouring. For some this will undoubtedly be appealing, but we can’t help but wonder whether an SUV shouldn’t by its very nature be a more masculine offering. In any event, the new ML is hardly ugly and the smoother design is said to be the result of prioritising improved aerodynamics. The bulbous nose can not be mistaken for anything other than a Mercedes, and the rear features some nice detailing, including wider tail lamps that adds “visual” width to the ML overall. It’s only on the sides where you will find some questionable sculpting and surfacing that conspire to make the ML look “under-wheeled” even though it boasts 18-inch alloys as standard.

There are no design-related question marks in the exquisite interior. Crafted from convincing materials and without frilly detailing, the more “formal” design and excellent fit and finish of this ML reminds one of Mercedes models of the past – it feels as solid as a German bank vault. Although this is the entry level model in the ML line-up, it hardly looks like it from behind the leather-wrapped, multi-function steering wheel. The neat instrumentation is set deep into two individual dials that flank a comprehensive trip computer. A full-colour screen for the various info-tainment functions is located near the top of the centre section of the facia. As with most new Mercedes models, the Comand controller, located on the transmission tunnel, is used to scroll between options on this screen. Ergonomically the ML 250 is excellent, even though particularly the multitude of buttons for the audio system initially appears daunting.

Seating comfort is excellent, with the steering wheel boasting generous rake and reach adjustability, and the driver’s seat boasting height adjustment, too. The seats themselves initially felt a little hard but nevertheless proved to be comfortable. With its long wheelbase and large body, the ML’s rear passengers are afforded stretch-out space. The rear seat bases can also tumble forward individually, with the seatbacks then folding down, resulting in a large, flat surface to transport bulky objects. The boot, even with all five seats occupied still measures a very generous 690 L.

Although a great many option boxes are available for ticking, the standard features package has been carefully considered. It includes such luxuries as keyless entry, climate control, rear park assist, leather upholstery and an audio system with Bluetooth and USB/aux support, but you pay extra for satellite navigation, auto lights etc. The safety package, however, is superb, with the ML boasting seven airbags and ESP (electronic stability system).

Focus on economy

As the BlueTec moniker indicates, this ML prioritises efficiency. It is powered by a 2,1-litre turbodiesel engine that delivers 150 kW and 500 Nm of torque. Now, as impressive as those figures may be, remember that this ML weighs more than two tonnes! Nevertheless, Mercedes-Benz claims a 0-100 km/h time of 9,0 seconds and a 210 km/h top speed. In reality, the ML 250 never feels quite that fast, even when the seven-speed automatic transmission’s Sport mode is selected. It does, however, sound quite sporty… Far more impressive is the economy on offer. It will take some very careful driving to match Mercedes’s claim of 6,5 L/100 km, but you should be able to average 8 L/100 km, which given the vehicle’s size and performance is not to be sneezed at. The engine, by the way, features two turbochargers, and is very refined.

The easygoing nature is also evident when cruising. The ML 250 uses a traditional steel suspension with anti-dive and anti-squat as well as stabiliser bars to deliver exceptional ride comfort, even on those big wheels. It remains supple and composed, even when the quality of road surface deteriorates badly. Of course, this being a 4Matic model, full-time all-wheel drive is standard, but it’s really only there to come to the rescue in low-grip conditions (muddy, icy etc) rather than endowing the ML with true off-road ability. In any event, the ground clearance of 191 mm is quite limited and there’s no low-range.

Mercedes-Benz ML 250 – Verdict

While the first-generation ML, which made its debut in 1997, was a groundbreaking car for Mercedes-Benz, it was however not quite up to the brand’s traditional levels of quality and refinement. The second-generation model was a vast improvement, and remained competitive right until the end. This new model does not represent as major a leap, but nevertheless refines and hones the ML offering even further. As a luxurious, safe and efficient premium SUV, there’s precious little wrong with it. It just needs a bit more oomph.

We like:

  • Great fuel economy
  • Cabin space
  • Build quality
  • Ride comfort

We don’t like:

  • Sparse standard equipment
  • Lazy performance

Also consider:

  • BMW X5 xDrive30d Steptronic: Unlike the Mercedes which prioritises fuel economy, the emphasis with the BMW remains on performance and dynamic finesse. Consequently it feels the livelier and more agile SUV, but it’s not nearly as economical (on paper).
  • Lexus RX450h F-Sport: The Lexus remains an odd-ball choice, but if it’s ultimate efficiency you’re after is worth considering. It matches the Mercedes’s claimed consumption but in reality is thirstier. On the other hand, it is loaded with features.
  • Volkswagen Touareg 3,0 V6 TDI BlueMotion Tiptronic: The Touareg may lack a prestige badge on the nose, but it’s a very, very good car with a good balance of luxury and comfort features and the VW Group’s impressive 3,0-litre turbodiesel engine. A steal second-hand.

1939 Packard Hearse will be highlight at Rand Show

Among the classical cars that will be featured at the World of Motoring exhibition in Hall 5 at the Rand Easter Show, will be an exquisitely restored 1939 Packard Hearse. The hearse was imported to South Africa and was used by Rogers Funeral Company based in Pretoria. In its now working condition, the hearse is commissioned for by its present owners Collinge & Company of Randburg.

Timeless Appeal

“A couple of years ago we wanted to get a vehicle that set us apart from other funeral directors,” said Mike Collinge. “We considered horse drawn hearses, as they use in the US in some parts, but horses need food and care, so we ruled that out. Then we discovered this partly-restored Packard that some Formula Ford racer was building to use to tow his race car.” “We put it back to original as far as the body was concerned. But for the mechanicals, we realised that we needed something modern, as the car was not going to be a show-piece but a working hearse.” he added The hearse is fitted with a Chevy V8 engine and front and rear Jaguar suspension. The cabin is styled with woodwork while the bodywork is completely original right down to the Packard wheels and hubcaps.

The Packard will be a part of a showcase of over 150 classic cars of all sorts and sizes. The 2013 Rand Easter Show takes place from Thursday 28 March to Monday 1 April at the Johannesburg Expo Centre, Nsasrec.

The model accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 4.9 seconds with the S tronic transmission and 0-100 km/h is achieved in 5.3 seconds with the six-speed manual transmission and reaches an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h.

The S3 is distinguished by modifications to the bumpers, the single-frame grille, air intakes, exterior mirror housings, side sills and rear spoiler. The four oval tailpipes of the exhaust system are embedded in the diffuser with chrome trim. The inside is styled with sport seats (optional S sport seats), instruments with grey dials and trim strips in black 3D look.

Shelby 1000 SC headed for New York Auto Show

Shelby American will be introducing the most powerful production, street legal muscle car in the world at the 2013 New York Auto Show this week. The 2013 Shelby 1000 S/C, which is based on the Shelby GT 500, now features a host of improvements compared to the Shelby 1000 shown at last year’s New Your Auto Show.

“The 2012 Shelby 1000 was launched to great acclaim at the New York Auto Show last year to celebrate our 50th anniversary,” said John Luft, president of Shelby American. “We’re bringing back the Shelby 1000 to New York, but with Ford’s new 2013 Shelby GT500 as the base car. With its new engine, launch control, adjustable suspension and other new enhancements, we’ve created a car with even more capabilities. The 2013 Shelby 1000 incorporates everything we’ve learned over five decades of creating high-performance vehicles.”

2013 Shelby 1000 S/C – Features

The Shelby 1000 S/C is fitted with a reworked 5.8-litre V8 petrol engine that produces 895kW. In comparison, the stock standard Shelby GT500 produces 494kW. A finely tuned adjustable suspension with a performance cooling package is included as well as large brakes and a Shelby Ford Racing 4.0-litre supercharger.

“The 2013 Shelby 1000 is the most powerful production muscle car on the market,” said Vince LaViolette, Shelby American’s test driver. “But this car cannot be defined by just its amazing power. The steering provides wonderful feedback and the car tracks beautifully, giving it an athletic feel. It attacks corners, ripping through them with minimal body roll and tremendous grip. Yet the Shelby 1000 can be so docile that you can cruise it down the streets of Manhattan.”

Only 100 2013 Shelby 1000’s will be built and each one will be numbered and documented in the official Shelby Registry. More information will become available at the New York Auto Show which starts on 29 March 2013.
