Audi A8 Long-Wheelbase set for release

The flagship Audi A8 Long-Wheelbase will soon be available to customers. The Audi A8 L will hit dealerships towards the end of 2010 with the cheapest in the range going for 79,900 Euros and the ultra-luxurious W12 going for 137,000 Euros. We will await further details on pricing and availability in South Africa.

Audi A8 Long-Wheelbase big on luxury and space

The Audi A8 Long-wheelbase has its wheelbase and length increased by 13 centimeters, bringing the total length to 5.27 meters, which is rather huge. Audi claims that the this increase in length is to benefit the passengers in the back seats.

The whole aim of the Audi A8 Long-Wheelbase is obviously comfort, improved space and luxury. As an extra, two of the rear seats can be fitted with ventilation and massage functions, as well as a folding tray and cooler box. It doesn’t stop there though as additional features include: a powered footrest, relaxation seat and an entertainment system.

Regarding the entertainment system, the Audi A8 L (Long-Wheelbase) is the first car to be fitted with integrated WLAN hotspot, allowing the passengers in the car to access the internet while driving.

Engine Options

Regarding the engine, the Audi A8 Long-Wheelbase will be available in five different models with three TDI and two FSI gasoline engines on offer. These all have improved performance as well as improved fuel efficiency. With the most impressive engine in the lineup being the 6.3 liter W12 which generates 368kW (500hp).

The transmission is controlled by an 8 speed tiptronic which can change gears electronically using the selector lever or the paddles on the steering wheel. This further reduces the A8’s fuel consumption levels.

Mini Countryman shows fresh design

Mini have begun to bridge outwards in recent times with regard to their design, and the new  Mini Countryman is a prime example. Mini have aimed the Countryman as something of a mixture between a normal Mini Cooper and a SUV with the emphasis on fun.

Mini Countryman is bigger, more stylish

The Mini Countryman is the first Mini to come with 4 doors and has an expanded interior with enough space for up to 5 people. At launch the Mini Countryman will come in five different engine types including three petrol and two diesel engines. The most powerful of the options being the Cooper S Countryman which comes with a 135kW/184hp, 1.6 liter, 4-cylinder engine.

Another new feature in the Mini Countryman is an all-wheel drive system they are calling MiniAll4. This is however an optional feature available in the Mini Cooper S Countryman and Mini Cooper D Countryman model. The all-wheel drive system aims to keep the driving experience in a Mini as fun and the responsiveness as quick as possible even when driving off-road.

Audi A4 2,0 TFSI Quattro S-Tronic (2010) Driving Impression

Although Audi offers the very appealing S4 derivative at the top of the current Audi A4 food chain, it is perhaps true that the company’s medium executive sedan line-up has been lacking in the excitement stakes lower down the scale. That is where the subject of this review, the Audi A4 2,0 TFSI Quatto S-Tronic comes in. It seemingly fuses the best of everything in the Audi stable, from the TT’s 2,0-litre turbo engine, to the 7-speed dual-clutch transmission and legendary quattro all-wheel drive, together into one very desirable package. But, at what cost?

Sporty, stylish looks for Audi A4

Although this particular Audi A4 model falls some way short of stepping on the S4’s toes in the looks department, it certainly appears beefed up. The Audi A4, with its elegant shape looks more muscular when stretched tightly over those big five-spoke 18-inch alloy wheels. Of course, Audi offers as many optional extras as you can afford to individualise your Audi A4 even further, but in general we like the subtlety of the treatment. It hints at the car’s performance potential… never shouts it.

Audi has taken a similar approach inside, where the cabin isn’t immediately much different to any other Audi A4. Not that this is a bad thing. After all, the Audi A4 arguably has the nicest facia design and best perceived quality levels of any car in this segment. And, once more, keep in mind that optional extras list…

That said, even as standard this Audi A4 cabin is an excellent place to spend time in, boasting very supportive and comfortable seats upholstered in fine-quality leather. The fit and finish of the facia is simply without equal, with the main moulding being of the soft-touch variety, and the various metallic elements boasting a convincing look and feel, too. In fact, the metallic accenting do wonders to lighten the ambience of the mostly black cabin. Ergonomically the facia also works well, although it takes time to get used to the electronic park brake on the centre console and the upright-mounted controls of the “drive select” system.

In typical Audi fashion, the standard features list is probably acceptable at the price, but not exceptional. You get cruise control, auto lights and wipers, climate control and so forth, but satellite navigation, for example, remains an optional extra. Nevertheless, because the basic design of the cabin is so good, few passengers are likely to complain about the comfort levels. The driver’s seat offers a wide range of adjustment, and so does the steering wheel. Rear legroom is also very good, courtesy of a long wheelbase.

Lovely drivetrain

Good looks will get you far these days – and Audi knows that all too well – but easily the most impressive aspect of this particular Audi A4 model is its drivetrain. At the price, the Audi A4 2,0 TFSI quattro s-tronic goes up against some six-cylinder rivals, which may be a concern for some, but in reality, on the road, the Audi A4 doesn’t have to stand back for these competitors at all.

The direct-injection, turbocharged 2,0-litre four delivers 155 kW and 350 Nm of torque, but because of the car’s overall responsiveness to throttle inputs, it feels even more powerful. Audi claims a 0-100 km/h time of 6,5 seconds and a 245 km/h top speed, both figures being perfectly in line with the competition. Importantly, there’s not much lag in the engine, so it pulls strongly from low-down, and the torque curve is flat, too, so there’s lots of power on tap all the way to the red line.

The seven-speed dual-clutch ‘box is a perfect match for the impressive engine. Cruise along, and it will flip up the gears quietly and slickly. Mash the throttle and, almost without hesitation, it will hook the right gear and the car will leap forward. Shift paddles are mounted behind the steering wheel, by the way, and it quickly becomes addictive driving in this “manual” fashion because the Audi A4 is so responsive. What also helps are the lovely exhaust blips when shifting down. It’s a car that encourages enthusiastic driving more than we had anticipated.

Lots of grip

As is to be expected, the quattro all-wheel drive system doesn’t really endow the Audi A4 with the type of adjustability that rear-wheel drive bestows upon the BMW 3 Series, for example, but what it does do is to raise the grip levels. A lot. Add the fat rubber and relatively low centre of gravity, and you’ve got a luxury sedan that can corner at very high speeds and feel resolutely stable. Those who get their kicks out of tail slides can move on now, but if you love the feeling of extreme g-forces, then this is your car. Note, however, that an optional adjustable damping system is available, and it increases grip levels even further!

As is the case with most Audis, the steering feels somewhat dead, but at least it is generally accurate. And while the ride is certainly on the firm side, especially at lower speeds, the damping is finely tuned to deliver excellent ride comfort on most surfaces and at most speeds.

Audi A4 – Verdict

There’s not much that the Audi A4 does wrong. Yes, it is very expensive, and there are six-cylinder offerings available for similar money, but this Audi A4 makes a very good case for the argument that you don’t really need those big engines anymore… The A4’s power unit is very eager, the transmission crisp and responsive, the cabin magnificent and the ride/handling compromise finely judged. It was always going to be a good car this… but we didn’t quite expect it to be quite this good.

We like:

  • Stylish looks
  • Excellent transmission
  • Strong performance
  • Ride/handling balance
  • Build quality

We don’t like:

  • Expensive features
  • Dull steering

Also consider:

  • BMW 330i Steptronic: The iconic straight-line six in this 3-Series provides lots of shove (power output is 190 kW) and as is to be expected the BMW sets the dynamic standard in this segment. The low-speed ride is firm, though, and the steering quite heavy. More expensive, too…
  • Mercedes-Benz C300 Avantgarde 7G-Tronic: Perhaps not as obviously performance-oriented, but the C-Class is a very agile handler and a pleasure to drive under all circumstances. 7G-Tronic is, however, not entirely convincing as an “enthusiast’s” transmission. Although the C300 has more power, it can’t match the Audi A4 performance. Spec levels are very good.
  • Lexus IS250 SE: Often overlooked, the Lexus is an entertaining car to drive even though in SE trim it is not exactly a sports-oriented model. Although the power output is comparable to the Audi A4, it can’t match the German’s performance. Dynamically nicely balanced and very highly specced, though.

BMW M5 model production ends

BMW‘s powerhouse sports sedan, the M5, has officially ended production. The E60 model version of the M5 has stopped production but not before churning out some impressive sales figures.

BMW M5 is a big success, future looks bright

With the first BMW M5 being introduced in 1984, the car has a long and impressive history. The current BMW M5 model however was released in 2005 and since that date has sold more than 20 500 units. These figures include sales of the BMW M5 Saloon and the BMW M5 Touring which was released a little later in 2007.

What makes these figures so impressive is that BMW sold more of the current M5 model than it’s predecessor, even though the predecessor was in production for a full year more.

The wait now is to see what BMW have to offer for the next generation M5, with rumours and spy shots popping up around the internet. We will however have to wait until 2011 to see the new BMW M5 but I have a feeling it will be well worth it.

New Aston Martin V8 Vantage N420 revealed

Released as a special edition, the Aston Martin N420 Vantage was designed with motor-sport in mind and the companies experiences on the Nurburgring 24 hour race. Back in 2006 Aston Martin entered the race with a near-standard and road-worthy V8 Vantage to compete against full on racing cars and has continued to enter ever since with notable success. It’s from this race experience that has inspired the design of the new Aston Martin V8 Vantage N420.

New Aston Martin V8 Vantage N420 is lighter

How different is the new Aston Martin V8 Vantage N420 from the previous V8 Vantage though? For starters it is 27kg lighter, thanks mostly to the use of carbon fibre. On the exterior there are now wider sills, a carbon fibre splitter, side strakes and difusser, gloss black wheels and black-mesh vents to complete the look. The interior features graphite instruments, a leather or Alcantara steering wheel and carbon fibre seats.

The Aston Martin V8 Vantage N420 comes with the sports pack as standard, including: revised springs, anti roll bars, dampers and a sports exhaust system. The engine is based on the previous N400 special edition, with a 4.7 liter ,420bhp and is capable of 180mph.

Aston Martin have begun production and will start sending out deliveries in August with an estimated price tag of 96,995 pounds.

New Smart Fortwo 2010 model revealed

Details of the new Smart Fortwo 2010 model have just been released and will be launched in the autumn of this year. Smart note that the new model has improvements to the interior, the exterior as well as an improved engine.

New Smart Fortwo – Features

The exterior of the new Smart Fortwo now comes in a wider range of colours and various areas of the car can now be painted in the body colour of the car on request. Another improvement to the exterior comes with LED day-time driving lights, although these are extras and don’t come standard.

Interior Features

As for the interior, there are a few cosmetic changes, some of the dials have been upgraded and the steering wheel is now a 3-spoke and is in leather. There are also some optional extras, including various storage compartments and LED lightning as well but nothing major.

Engine Performance

The engine see’s some welcome changes, with a reduction in CO2 emissions and improved fuel economy. The 40kW cdi turbodiesel has a CO2 emission rate of just 86g/km. With the 45kW and 50kW engines consuming just 4.2liters of petrol per 100km (Combined figure).

The lure of Smart cars has always been their fuel economy, small size and the fact that they are light on petrol. The new Smart Fortwo improves on the main selling points of the Smart brand and should sell well in the 45 countries it will be available in.

Ford Figo shipment heading to South Africa

The Ford Figo has been doing extremely well in India since it’s release in March this year. Ford India’s sales figures for June increased by 267% compared to the same month in 2009. This was largely due to the Ford Figo who’s strong sales figures accounted for 24 000 vehicles sold since it’s release.

Ford Figo in South Africa

With the global trend of people wanting cars that are smaller, with better fuel economy and reduced CO2 emission levels, it’s no surprise that the response to the Ford Figo in India has been so strong. Ford India are shipping 1200 Figo models to South Africa in this shipment and are hoping to ship a total of 5000 Figo’s to South Africa by the end of the year. Ford expects the initial batch of 1200 Figo models to reach their 123 dealerships across South Africa by the middle of July.

The Ford Figo comes in a 1.4 petrol and diesel version.

New Range Rover Evoque details emerge

Land Rover have finally released the first image and details of the next addition to the Range Rover family and it’s called the Evoque. The new Range Rover Evoque will make it’s debut at the Paris Motor show on the 30th of September and then be released later in 2011. With the final goal having the vehicle available in over 160 countries around the world.

New Range Rover Evoque set for succes

The new Range Rover Evoque is the most fuel efficient, lightest and smallest Range Rover in the companies history. Regarding the name Evoque, Range Rover had this to say: “A name which implies exclusivity and arouses emotions, Evoque is cosmopolitan and cross-continental, sophisticated and matches the car’s urban elegance”. Whatever that means?

The new Range Rover Evoque maintains many of the exterior styling that has become so synonymous with the Range Rover brand. From the distinctive falling roof to the rising waistline, the Evoque is true to the Range Rover styling roots. The Evoque however is more compact and obviously fuel efficient, lending itself to the new generation of SUV’s that are becoming more and more popular around the world. People are looking for vehicles that are more compact, more fuel efficient and have less CO2 emissions and most of the big manufacturers are following this trend.

The new Range Rover Evoque will do really well and should fit nicely in the Range Rover luxury SUV segment.

Bentley Continental Supersports Convertible Revealed

Bentley have always made amazing looking cars, and the Bentley Continental Supersports Convertible is no exception. The convertible Continental still obviously remains true to the Bentley style and shape that have made the cars such icons. This model however has attempted to add a little more funkiness to the Bentley range and give it a much younger look.

Bentley Continental Supersports Convertible is built for speed

Bentley are noting that the Continental Supersports convertible is the fastest and most potent drop-top they have ever made. And this is confirmed by the fact that it hits 0-100km/h in just 4.2 seconds and has a top speed of 325km/h. Which is quite a bit faster than you would ever really need to go I imagine. Not only is it the fastest 4 seater convertible Bentley have made but it is also the fastest 4-seater convertible in the world.

The Bentley Continental Supersports Convertible has a 621bhp 463kW Twin turbo-charged W12 engine which is however the same engine as in the Continental Coupe. The convertible also uses FlexFuel technology, allowing the car to be powered by either Petrol or E85 bioethanol or both combined. This has lead to a reduction of CO2 emissions by up to 70% which I dont imagine is much of a concern to most people who could afford this car though.

As with all Bentley models, you can expect to pay quite a huge amount for the car but at least you will be saving the environment.

New Renault Wind details released

The new Renault Wind was showcased earlier this year and more details have since emerged. Renault are marketing the Wind as a fun, funky, compact run-around 2 seater coupe-roadster. Which is quite a combination but Renault feel like the Wind should fit in perfectly in their list of models between the Clio and the Twingo.

Funky fun drive for new Renault Wind

Obviously the Wind’s biggest drawing point is the electric powered roof system which can open in just 12 seconds. Much effort has been made to keep the car small, light and yet still obviously good looking with some pace on the side. The new Renault Wind comes in two engine types; the TCe 100 and a 1.6 16V 133hp variant. Renault note that the Wind has the best weight to body rigidity ratio in a coupe roadster, which provides a smooth ride, low CO2 emissions and increased fuel economy.

Another motivation for Renault when making the Wind, was they felt that “wind in the hair” driving should just be reserved for the luxury segment and sports cars. The new Renault Wind is however still made with function in mind, including the boot space which is equal in size to the Renault Clio. Renault have said that part of the lure of the Wind as a compact coupe-roadster was it’s price and keeping it affordable, else it would have lost it’s competitive edge. Renault haven’t announced it’s expected price yet or if it will be released in South Africa but we wait and see.

The new Renault Wind will go on sale in the United Kingdom in July this year and later in the rest of Europe.
