Ford Curve Control safety system introduced

Ford Curve Control is a driver assistance system that aims to assist the driver with under-steer when cornering. The system has initially been implemented into the next generation Ford Explorer, which isn’t a vehicle we get in South Africa, but Ford do mention that they plan to fit Curve Control onto not just SUV’s but many of their car models as well in the future.

Improved safety with Ford Curve Control

If a driver enters a turn too fast, then the Ford Curve Control system will automatically slow the vehicle down in 2 ways. First it will reduce the amount of torque to the engine and secondly it will automatically apply breaking to each of the wheels depending on how much is required, the system can apply all four wheel breaking if necessary.

The next obvious issue then is how does the Ford Curve Control system determine when and to what extent it will assist the driver. The system will use sensors that are the same used in the Roll Stability Control. These sensors will measure roll rate, yaw rate, lateral acceleration, wheel speeds and steering wheel angle.

The Ford Curve Control system uses the data taken from these sensors when the driver is taking a corner, it then determines if the car is turning the amount that the driver wants the vehicle to turn. If the answer is no, then the system kicks in and does something about it. Ford have tested this system while pulling a trailer and mention that it still works as intended.

New Ford Mondeo gets updated styling and features

Details of the new Ford Mondeo have been released and will be showcased at the Moscow Motor Show in August before going on sale later in 2010. As far as what has changed, the interior and exterior has been improved as well as the fuel consumption and the safety features.

Fancy looks for new Ford Mondeo

Looks wise, the grille has been updated as well as the front bumper, which now includes LED day time running lights. The rear has also been updated to include LED lights. There are no major changes regarding the interior other than the center console, which includes the satellite navigation.

Under the hood the new Ford Mondeo will feature the higher performance 240 PS 2.0 liter Ford EcoBoost turbo-charged petrol engine. The big drawing point of this engine is that it provides up to 20% better fuel economy and reduces CO2 emissions also by 20% compared to traditional petrol engines around the same capacity.

Also on the list of improvements are some driver assistance features which include: Lane departure warning, Driver alter and Auto high beam. Another new feature added for the first time in the new Ford Mondeo is a Blind-Spot Information System, speed limiter and rear view camera.

Expect more details to be released in the next few months.

Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG E-cell prototype preview

The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG E-cell prototype has been introduced, which is a battery electric version of the standard SLS AMG supercar. It’s something of a strange combination, that of a supercar and a drive to be environmentally friendly as most supercars are the exact opposite. But that is possibly reason enough for some of the big car manufacturers to put some effort into the area. All new vehicles seem to have some kind of eco-friendly aim to them, so why should supercars be left out?

Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG E-cell prototype is fast and friendly

Onto the important details. The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG E-cell prototype manages to complete 0-100km/h in just 4 seconds, which is rather impressive given the general impression on the performance of electric vehicles. The SLS produces 526 hp and each of it’s 4 engines produce up to 12000rpm.

An interesting point about the batteries is that in order to produce such a massive amount of power, they require a lot of temperature monitoring. During extreme heat the car aircon even kicks in to cool down the batteries, while at low temperatures the batteries are heated to ensure they maintain an ideal running temperature.

The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG E-cell prototype still has a long way to go before eventually hitting the markets. It will no doubt be produced in very small numbers but it does hint at a future of electric supercars.

Opel Astra Sports Tourer details released

Details of the new Opel Astra Sports Tourer have been released which will go on sale in November this year. The Opel Astra Sports Tourer will make it’s debut at the Paris Motor Show in October before hitting the dealerships in the following month. The goal of this Astra is obviously practicality but Opel have still made an effort to make the wagon look stylish. A few improvements have resulted in the Opel Astra Sports Tourer having a load space of 1550 liters which will no doubt be its biggest draw card.

Style and space for new Opel Astra Sports Tourer

This increase is space is created by the new FlexFold rear seat system. This system allows the rear seats to be lowered by simply pressing a button located on the side walls of the cargo department. The seats will then automatically fold onto themselves, this feature is the first of it’s kind in a compact wagon.

The new Opel Astra Sports Tourer will be available in 8 different diesel and petrol engines, with a top power of 132kW (180hp). Obviously the Astra will be available in both automatic and manual, with the manual option including a shift-up indicator. This indicator is intended to improve fuel economy in the manual option, also intended to improve fuel economy is a start/stop feature that will be introduced at a later stage.

2011 VW Jetta model released

The 2011 VW Jetta has been released and VW have made a point of keeping the price affordable. The starting price is around $16 000, which is very cheap but obviously the price will change quite a bit once the vehicle is for sale in South Africa. The 2011 VW Jetta will be available in America this October, there is no date set for a South African release though.

All-new look and feel for 2011 VW Jetta

Under the hood the US version of the Jetta will be released with 4 different engines, each available in automatic and manual, including a 2.0 turbo diesel. This engine will reach 0-100km/h in just 8.7s which is not too bad considering the price of the car. There will also be a 6 speed DSG transmission available on the 2.0 TDI and 2.0 TSI.

The exterior has been completely redesigned, including the wheelbase and car length which are now both bigger. The look has been sharpened to make the Jetta look more stylish and elegant. Regarding the interior, with the extended vehicle length, the new Jetta has a massive amount of legroom, and best-in-class rear legroom. The center drivers console is aligned towards the driver and controls car climate, radio and navigation.

Lastly safety has not been ignored with the new 2011 VW Jetta and it features various crash safety improvements.

2010 Mercedes-Benz R-Class details released

Details of the 2010 Mercedes-Benz R-Class have been released. The new R-Class debuted at the New York International Motor Show earlier this year in March and now the full details are available. Mercedes note that many of the changes to the new R-Class were taken from their other SUV and Saloon models, included in this is the new completely redesigned front section.

New looks for 2010 Mercedes-Benz R-Class

The new 2010 Mercedes-Benz R-class is also available with a diesel option. Engine output is the same as the previous R-Class but the performance has been improved.  Fuel consumption has been reduced, with the R300 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY consuming around 7% less fuel than its predecessor, which works out to about 7.6 liters / 100km. The V6 Diesel engine now boasts 195kW (265hp) compared to the previous models 165kW. The new model completes 0-100km/h in just 7.6 seconds while reaching a top speed of 235km/h.

Looks-wise, the front has been redesigned and emphasizes the width with a horizontally structured bonnet. Also on the list of redesigned features: the vehicles wings, the radiator grille and surround, head lamps and the bumpers. Mercedes-Benz have tried to make the the new R-Class as styling as possible, which is not easy in the MPV segment. That said they have made the new model as coupe-styled as possible and it does look good.

BMW 535i Steptronic (2010) Driving Impression

A new BMW 5 Series is always something of an event. This BMW 535i model performs a very important role in the BMW line-up, as it is the car that most 3-Series drivers aspire to own, and also one which most 7-Series drivers will quite comfortably buy down to. It is also regularly used as the launch pad for new ideas and technologies, and sets the tone for the generation of BMW models to follow it. The previous model prioritised dynamics, performance and an “interesting” design. Does the new model continue the theme, or present a change of direction?

BMW 535i is Bigger and “Softer”

The new 5 Series has grown significantly and, in the metal, looks a lot bigger than its predecessor. This is partly due to it being based on the 7 Series’s platform, but also because the previous car was often criticised for being a bit tight in the rear. Also, new E-Class has grown, too… In response, the BMW 535i now measures 4 899 mm in length and sports a very impressive 2 968 mm wheelbase which really should address that rear seat legroom issue. The boot, too, is vast at 520 L. But what of the looks? The curves are certainly softer and the width very apparent, especially from the rear. It’s not an unattractive car, but some onlookers thought it was a bit too “conservative” and generic.

As ever, BMW, offers a vast number of optional extras, including bigger wheels and this car’s body looks immeasurably sportier on 19-inch alloys, rather than the standard 18’s. Swing open the weighty doors and you’re greeted with a facia that wouldn’t look out of place in the far more expensive 7-Series. Again, the use of horizontal lines accentuate the car’s width, but the clever use of satin silver trim pieces and high-tech controls (pistol-grip gearlever, iDrive) and displays at least make the facia interesting to look at, too. The instruments look minimalistic in the traditional BMW fashion, but are very high-tech upon closer inspection.

As ever, BMW has paid particular attention to driver comfort. The leather-wrapped steering wheel boasts a nice thick rim, and the column is rake and reach adjustable. There are also gearshift paddles behind the steering wheel, and that pistol-grip gearlever falls easily to hand. The front seats feature partial electric adjustment and offer excellent support and lateral bolstering. As is the case with most BMWs, the driver’s seat can be adjusted very low down, which is preferable for enthusiastic drivers. The news is also good in the rear, where the stretched dimensions have indeed liberated a lot more space for knees.

Standard features include climate control, auto lights/wipers, radio/CD player, audio/phone remote controls, front and rear park assist, cruise control and sumptuous leather upholstery. The safety package boasts no fewer than eight airbags and BMW’s much-admired DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) system.

Iron fist, velvet glove

Under the BMW 535i long and contoured bonnet lies one of the brand’s (and the world’s) best engines, a turbocharged, 3,0-litre straight-six that punches out 225 kW and 400 Nm of torque, the latter being available from 1 200 to 5 000 rpm. Mated with the company’s excellent new eight-speed automatic transmission, this engine powers the near 1,8-tonne 535i to a 250 km/h top speed and from rest to 100 km/h in only 6,1 seconds. But besides obvious performance, it also has three other talents. Firstly, it remains impressively smooth and refined, no matter what the engine speed is. Secondly, the torque spread endows it with ferocious overtaking punch that squeezes occupants’ backs into those thick seatbacks. And, last but not least, it is perhaps also the most frugal engine in its segment, with a consumption of around 9 L/100 km being achievable if driven gingerly.

A core trait of the 5 Series, through all its model types, has been class-leading dynamics – the 5 Series has always set the dynamic benchmark. Concerns that the extra weight, bulk and electronic gadgetry would erode some of the driver enjoyment are immediately dispelled when the BMW 535i starts being driven with vigour. Yes, the ride is no longer as unyielding at low speeds, but this doesn’t mean it’s become too soft for the corners. BMW’s experience with RunFlat tyres is starting to pay off, and the newcomer manages to find an exquisite balance between luxury car ride comfort, and entertaining handling. In a sense, then, it can be argued that the 5 Series now manages to offer Mercedes-like ride qualities, but without sacrificing any of its sporting abilities. Quite an achievement…

BMW 535i – Verdict

At first glance it looks like BMW has effected a radical change of direction with the new 5 Series. It is bigger, more comfort-oriented and more electrically assisted than ever before. In reality, however, BMW has simply addressed the predecessor’s faults (rear space, ride comfort) but it has managed to do so without really taking away anything from what has always made the 5 Series a class leader. But, a word of caution… The standard specification of the BMW 535i will please most, but there are lots of options to choose from. Research has shown that the cost of such extras is hardly ever recouped upon resale. Tick those boxes carefully…

We like:

• Spacious cabin
• Cabin comfort
• Improved ride
• Dynamic ability
• Wonderful engine

We don’t like:

• Pricey options

Also consider:

• Mercedes-Benz E350 7G-tronic: A very comfortable, typically conservative Mercedes offering. Like the BMW 535i, you’ll need to specify some optional extras, but that’s not the E350’s biggest problem – the engine is comprehensively outclassed by the unit in the BMW 535i.

• Audi A6 3,0T FSI quattro Tiptronic: The current A6 is nearing the end of its product life cycle, but remains a solid choice for more conservative folk. Its design may no longer be cutting edge, but the engine is bang up to date, and the standard specification far more generous than the BMW 535i.

• Lexus GS450h SE: This petrol/electric hybrid offers comparable power and is similarly priced to the BMW 53i. The GS is often underrated, offering exceptional build quality, a spacious, feature-rich cabin, and superb ride comfort. An interesting alternative.

New Harley Davidson XR1200X Released

Details for the new Harley Davidson XR1200X bike have been released. The XR1200X will be made for export only in 2010 and later in 2011 for the United States. The front and rear suspension can be fully customizable and adjusted to match the rider weight, riding style and the road conditions.

New Harley Davidson XR1200X offers classic Harley Ride

The engine is a 1200cc evolution V-Twin. Features Dunlop Qualifier D209 tires which were designed specifically for the new Harley Davidson XR1200X. Nissin® dual front brakes feature 292mm full-floating rotors and four-piston calipers. 3.5-gallon fuel tank with aircraft-style aluminum alloy fuel filler.

Showa Big Piston Front fork (BPF) eliminates many of the internal components used in a cartridge-type fork, resulting in lighter overall fork weight. The large-diameter of the BPF internal piston allows a reduction in damping pressure for outstanding feedback and smooth action. Rebound and compression damping may be fine tuned with adjuster screws located on top of the fork bolts. The spring pre-load is adjusted with a M5 hex screw on the axle holders.

New Porsche Cayenne gets efficient V6 Petrol and Diesel Engines

The new Porsche Cayenne will be available in both efficient V6 petrol and diesel models. Even in the SUV market the focus on new cars has definitely been making them in-line with international emission standards and keeping their fuel efficiency as prominent as possible.

Less fuel consumption for new Porsche Cayenne

The new Porsche Cayenne will consume just 9.9 liters/100km which is around 28.5 mpg. This makes the new Porsche Cayenne about 20% better than the previous model. The diesel version also shows impressive figures, with fuel consumption down by 20% as well.

Porsche note that the reduction in fuel consumption is largely due to the new Tiptronic S 8-speed automatic gearbox. The car features auto stop-start, wide spread of gear ratios and a general reduction in the cars weight. This has also added to the fact that the new Porsche Cayenne is more agile and has improved performance.

The petrol version of the new Porsche Cayenne is powered by a 300hp 220kW 3.6 liter V6 engine which gives it a top speed of 230km/h and a 0-100km/h in just 7.5s. The diesel version has a top speed of 218km/h and a 0-100km/h in just 7.8s. Both the petrol and diesel models of the new Cayenne come standard in 18-inch wheels.

The new Porsche Cayenne will go on sale in Europe for 59 596 Euros.
