New Citroen C4 details revealed

Details of the new Citroen C4 have just been announced and it’s expected to be released in early 2011, making its debut at the Paris Motor Show in September this year. The style of the new Citroen C4 has been purposely made to be aerodynamic as well as obviously good looking with regard to the upgraded front end and rear spoiler. One of the key points of the new Citroen C4 is the 408 liter boot, which is currently the biggest in it’s class.

New Citroen C4 packed with features

Citroen have included an interactive dashboard display in the new Citroen C4, the driver can adjust the colour of the instrument display as well as control the aircon and choose which sounds to use for the alerts. Also on the list of new features in the C4 is a blind-spot monitoring system, a cornering light function, cruise-control and speed limiter.

Another great feature is the eTouch system. This system provides the driver with emergency assistance and also lets the driver monitor their driving patterns. The driver is then able to analyze the fuel consumption and the eTouch system will provide advice on how to improve fuel economy. I’m guessing it will keep reminding the driver to drive slower but it could provide more in-depth advice. The system will also let the driver monitor the technical status of the car, which will let the driver know which parts are in need of repair or service.

Audi Travolution technology to reduce fuel consumption

The main focus for Audi Travolution technology, which currently in development, is to lower CO2 emissions and improve fuel economy. For a change though its not entirely directed at just their vehicles. Audi are experimenting and developing technologies to be installed into traffic lights around town. These traffic lights will then be able to communicate with your car, with the ultimate goal of reducing CO2 emissions and to reduce fuel consumption, but how will it all work?

Audi Travolution encourages smart driving to reduce consumption

What Audi found during their studies was that when a car comes to a stop at a red robot and then accelerates off again when the light is green, the car has just used 0.02 liters of fuel. Their aim with these studies and new technologies is to reduce this entirely, if possible. They kitted out various Audi cars with this heads up display unit which receives information from the traffic lights regarding when the light is going to turn green. It then automatically suggests the ideal speed that the driver should go, in order for the light to be green when the driver arrives at the light.

Just how much of an effect will this have in the long run? If the Audi Travolution technology existed in every traffic light in Germany, Audi say that approximately 900 million liters of fuel will be saved per year. This technology works in conjunction with many of the new start-stop functions that are built into cars to further reduce fuel consumption at red traffic lights, further increasing their reductions.

Further added to the Audi Travolution technology is a red light warning, that alerts the driver if they are driving through the traffic light when it is red, with the hope that the number of drivers jumping red lights is reduced. There are some additional features as well, which will attempt to provide information on traffic jams and the like but we will have to see just how well these features turn out.

How Gauteng and its roads effect the cars people buy and drive

While it is obviously impossible to say for sure which cars will be the most popular in a particular year, there is a certain amount of an educated prediction that can be made based on previous years trends. (more…)

The new Opel Meriva took home awards for innovation, design, functionality and ergonomics. While the new Opel Astra won in the categories of: design, functionality and ergonomics. Both models then also won “Best Product of the year 2010” in their respective categories.

This is a big boost to Opel, with their new lineup of models being strengthened by these awards. The new Opel Astra and Meriva are already causing quite a stir and should prove to be very popular among new and used car buyers alike.

Honda launches 2011 model of the PCX Scooter.

With the PCX, Honda have made a scooter with many advancements and luxuries not always found on run of the mill models. The PCX is a 125cc but comes with many features to entice any hardened scooter fan.

The PCX is designed for running errands, short commutes and even quick getaways. The emphasis is definitely on fun and a stylish feel while still providing some luxuries like an automatic transmission. The PCX also has an electric starter and a fuel-injected 4-stroke engine.

Another feature that Honda are punting on the PCX is the amount of carry space under the seat, they mention that it can fit a full-face helmet in. Added to this is a separate glove compartment for additional storage. Also noted is the anti-theft ignition cover and locking steering.

All in all quite a well rounded scooter.

Volkswagen Polo 1,4i Comfortline (2010) Driving Impression

It is fair to say that automotive “brand” personalities are becoming blurred. We live in an era where the top selling Porsche is an SUV and Volkswagen arguably makes the best pick-up. The reason? Well, market research conducted by car companies on a worldwide scale will inevitably yield the same answers. Yet, there is one corner of the market where this trend doesn’t seem to apply – the so-called B-segment for hatchbacks. In this, arguably the most important segment of all, car manufacturers appear to be in strong disagreement about what the paying customer really wants.

As a result, you have a car such as the Honda Jazz, the automotive equivalent of a pair of sensible shoes. Judged purely on what is measurable, the Jazz is unbeatable, offering the most space, the cleverest flexibility, the most bulletproof reliability and a customer service satisfaction record that is the envy of even the Germans. And yet it is not the top seller in its segment, which also includes the sporty Ford Fiesta, quirky Citroen C3, boring Toyota Yaris and retro-funky Nissan Micra. A more disparate bunch of cars you’re unlikely to find in any other segment.

Judging purely by historical sales, however, these manufacturers will do good to pay less attention to market research and to take a closer look at the Volkswagen recipe. The Volkswagen Polo does not attempt to be sexy, nor clever, overtly sporty, or loaded to the roof with standard features. It’s a pretty straightforward car, with no frills and even fewer thrills. And yet it works beautifully.

Sophisticated cabin for Volkswagen Polo

It starts with the styling. Conservative and grown-up, the Volkswagen Polo nevertheless possesses an appealing sense of “class”, which is rather lacking among its rivals. The simplicity continues inside, where South Africa’s Oona Scheepers (VW interior designer), has created a cabin that perhaps lacks a “wow” factor, but which feels immediately comfortable. Volkswagen knows all too well that doing the basics right is what really matters for long-term ownership satisfaction. For that reason, the Volkswagen Polo features rake and reach adjustable steering wheel as well as a height-adjustable driver’s seat. There isn’t another car in this segment with as comfortable a driving position as this.

With its wider tracks, the Volkswagen Polo offers significantly more shoulder space than its predecessor (now on sale as the Vivo), but that said it is not the most spacious car in its segment. The boot is average in size, but does feature a full-size spare under its floor, which is increasingly rare. Rear legroom is also average at best.

Volkswagen is often criticised for the meagre standard specification of its products, but the Volkswagen Polo Comfortline certainly has what is necessary. There’s a leather-wrapped steering wheel with remote audio controls, a sound system with auxiliary support, front and side airbags, air-conditioning, electric windows and mirrors and central locking. Noticeable for its absence is a standard service plan, but Volkswagen knows it doesn’t need this “marketing tool” to sell its vehicles. Volkswagen Polo customers generally also know that the resale value of this VW is among the best in class, so they can afford to fork out a bit more when purchasing, and recoup come trade-in time.

Behind the wheel

On the road, the Volkswagen Polo continues with its grown-up behaviour. The focus is entirely on ride comfort and refinement. In fact, in a segment where there appears to be a great effort to reproduce hot hatch handling for the masses, with resultant poor refinement and harsh ride qualities, the Polo’s quiet, laid-back character is a breath of fresh air. It certainly rates among the best in this segment to take on a long-distance trip.

Unfortunately it is on such longer trips that you’re likely to discover the Polo’s most significant shortcoming – its engine. The little 1,4-litre mill is appreciably refined and frugal (expect to achieve around 7 litres/100 km), but only delivers 63 kW. Couple this with gearing aimed at relaxed driving, and overtaking acceleration can be described as leisurely at best. But, around town, the Volkswagen Polo 1,4i is lively enough and the smooth five-speed transmission a delight.

Volkswagen Polo – Verdict

Classy, refined and superbly comfortable, it’s easy to understand the Polo’s success. It is a car that may lack the “gotta-have-it” effect at first glance, but instead offers an enduring and growing appeal. Expect this one to be at or near the top of the sales charts for years, and to then become a used car champion as well.

We like:

  • Grown-up design
  • Comfort
  • Refinement
  • Fuel economy
  • Resale value

We don’t like:

  • Lethargic performance
  • Rear leg-/headroom
  • Lack of standard service plan

Also consider:

  • Opel Corsa 1,4 Enjoy: An underestimated and ageing rival. Facia design has dated well and the quality is good. Steering lacks feel and 66 kW engine is no fireball. Plus, Opel resale values are no match for the Volkswagen Polo. To be fair, the Corsa is also no match for the Polo.
  • Honda Jazz 1,4i LX: If you want ultimate spaciousness, interior flexibility and no-nonsense ownership, the Jazz is unbeatable. Dull exterior design hides a car that’s surprisingly full of “zest” – it’s one of the fastest in this segment!
  • Ford Fiesta 1,4 Trend: Styled to appeal to a more youthful crowd, the Fiesta offers a facia design inspired by modern cell’phones. Dynamically, the Fiesta perhaps strikes the best balance between refined ride comfort and fun handling. But it lacks the Polo’s class and solidity.

Bismarck du Plessis sponsored with new Ford Ranger

Ford have decided to give South African rugby star Bismarck du Plessis one of their new Ford Ranger bakkies as part of a new sponsorship deal. The Ford Ranger is a double cab 3.0 litre TDCI 4×4 bakkie and produces 115kW at 3200rpm.

Ford Ranger and Bismarck du Plessis alike

Ford have a long-standing relationship with SA rugby and it is great to see them continuing their support. One can only assume they selected Bismarck as the representative because he is built like a bakkie and goes hand in hand with the Ford Ranger. Ford note that Bismarck is a hero to many young South Africans through his rugby play and this partnership is a massive positive boost for both parties.

Mini BeachComber concept may see production

The Mini Beachcomber concept debuted at this years Detroit Auto Show and caused a massive amount of buzz. So much so in fact that BMW are seriously considering putting the Mini Beachcomber into production. Don’t hold your breath just yet though, as it’s still just a rumor and if it was given the go-ahead it would only be ready in the next few years.

Mini Beachcomber could be reality

There could definitely be an audience for the Mini Beachcomber though, as it draws some elements from the Toyota Rav4 and combines them with the Mini look to create a fun and funky car that doesn’t necessarily need to stay on the road. The doors of the concept were left off, as well as the boot to give on-lookers a better view of what the Mini Beachcomber has to offer and the response seems good enough to justify its production. Now we just wait and see what BMW decide.

Opel Corsa stickers supports World Cup

Opel Corsa owners in Europe can now kit out their Corsa’s with the designs of their favourite team. With stickers including the flags of: Denmark, Portugal, Sweden, Germany, England, Italy, Netherlands, France and Switzerland. What makes these stickers really work is that they are easy to apply and easy to remove. Also with them being custom made for the Opel Corsa, they fit on perfectly with the exact dimensions of the car to ensure they look stylish and classy.

Opel Corsa looks better in stickers

Covering your car with branding or stickers can often look tacky or even a bit like your car is ready to hit the track on a race day. But with these custom designed stickers from Opel they remain minimalistic and subtle. The stickers sell for 149 Euros in Germany which is quite a heavy price but either way, they look really good and it’s nice to see the car makers getting behind the world cup and the supporters.
