Nissan Teases Mysterious SUV Concept

Nissan has released teaser image of its new concept that looks like a crossover or an SUV that will supposedly preview an extension of the company’s current design language.

Nissan SUV concept minor details

Said to be unveiled at the Sao Paulo Motor Show in less than two weeks, the new concept seems to feature a conspicuous grille flanked distinctive headlights and Nissan badging, a sculpted hood, as well as bulging fenders, roof rails and large off-road tyres.

The company hasn’t revealed anything about the concept, and the press note merely reads – “Prepare yourself for the world premiere of Nissan’s new concept car at Sao Paulo Motor Show 2014.” It is however rumoured that the concept could be a follow up from the 2012 Extrem SUV Concept which was said to resemble the Nissan Juke.

The mysterious SUV concept will be unveiled on 28 October 2014, check back for full details.

2015 Opel Corsa OPC Line Showcased

Opel’s widely critiqued 2015 Corsa hatchback was accused of looking too familiar to previous models, but the addition of the OPC line seems to bring about better visual changes.

Corsa OPC line changes

The Corsa OPC Line adds a range of styling changes including a new lower lip spoiler at the front, longer side skirts and a tailgate-mounted spoiler, along with black accents and a chrome finished exhaust tip.

Adding more of a sporty look are gloss black alloy wheels, while on the inside, the model gains a flat-bottomed steering wheel, leather-wrapped gear knob and alloy pedals. Further trim changes include red highlights and black dash accents.

Engine line-up

As standard, the Corsa range is powered by a range of engines including a new 1.0-litre turbocharged three-cylinder petrol unit available in either 66 kW or 84 kW guise with torque of 170 Nm; a turbocharged 1.4-litre petrol engine delivering 73 kW and 200 Nm of torque; two naturally aspirated four-cylinder engines – a 1.2-litre with 51 kW and a 1.4-litre with 66 kW. There’s also a 1.3-litre CDTi diesel with outputs of 55 kW and 70 kW.

Datsun Go: Officially Launched in SA

Nissan launched the new Datsun Go to the media near the OR Tambo Airport yesterday, and spent a huge portion of the six-hour launch programme out-lining its marketing strategy, while the obligatory test drive was restricted to urban confines, not a single stretch of highway to be found on the route schedule.

That was a pity, as I would have liked to see how the  Datsun Go’s  tiny 1.2-litre three-cylinder engine, rated at just 50 kW, handled itself out there in the cut-and-thrust of the N12, trading lanes with real live big trucks and delivery vans seemingly on a mission from some uncompromising dictator.

Nevertheless, it was one of the most interesting launches of the year, with the Datsun nameplate making its first new-car presence felt since the early 1980s, when the entire company decided to change its name to Nissan.

Datsun Go Price in South Africa

We were all suitably impressed that the newly formed (for the year 2014) Datsun division here had managed to keep the launch price of the base model, known as the Mid, right down to R89 500. This is indeed an achievement, given that two years ago when it decreed that Datsun would be back, and that the new car would cost under R100 000, the rand was some 30 per cent stronger on the international money markets.

The huge media throng was less than impressed upon hearing that both the base model and the up-spec Lux model (which we drove, and costs R99 500) is not equipped with either ABS or airbags. Apparently, these items are coming early in the new year, but expect the prices to rise accordingly.

Design and looks

The new Go, in the metal, looks quite cute and funky with a bold trapezoidal styling at the front, diagonal lines on the sides, with a rounded rear end. What makes it look rather odd is that the ride height is extremely high, and that the standard-spec 13-inch steel wheels, running mere 155/70  rubber, don’t come anywhere near filling the wheel arches, particularly the rear ones.

In fact the car has a slight down-at-the-front, up-at-the-rear stance, but it is worth pointing out, as Datsun’s marketing people did, that this  high ride-height is useful when negotiating the potholes and speed bumps of Gauteng roads.

Cabin

The interior has a pleasant funky look about the dashboard, which should appeal to the young market of first-time buyers that Datsun is targeting. The dash is finished in a kind of light-sand colour, and the seats are in a contrasting dark-brown, using a fabric that doesn’t look all-that durable, but is pleasant on the eye.

The front seat is unusual in that it is a sort of semi-bench, so if you and your buds are young and very thin, you could almost squeeze three people up front. Or, your front passenger could move in tight to be right next to you while you work that gear stick. And you will be working that gear stick a lot thanks to the small engine.

How Does It Drive?

The engine is red-lined at just over 5 000 rpm and just as you are really beginning to groove on that lovely three-cylinder soul-wail (the best part of the car for me is the sound of the engine) it’s time to change up. On an urban route such as our launch drive, you’ll probably find yourself using third gear most of all at suburban speed limits. It will be interesting to see if the Datsun Go matches the consumption claim of 5.2L/100 km.

We tried using fourth and fifth (the gearbox is a five-speeder) on occasion through the ‘burbs and it was possible for short spells on the flat, but if any acceleration was needed you were soon back to third or even second gear. Max torque is rated at a modest 104 Nm. The ride is not bad over the bumpy stuff. The driving position for me  at 1.83m meant my left knee was too close to the umbrella handbrake, and the steering column is non-adjustable.

Standard Features

But air-con is standard on both the very cheap and the cheap model, as are electric window lifts for the front. And there is a special smart-phone docking system on the dash enabling owners to easily pair their phones with the car’s sound system.

Space at the rear is fine for even passengers of 1,82 metres and taller, so the skinny young upwardly-mobile first-time buyers Datsun is targeting should be happy with the basics. The boot at 265 Litres is actually near the top of the class for this kind of car.

Accessories

There is a whole range of accessory gear available for the Datsun Go from the get-go at the 45 dealers country-wide where the Datsun brand is available right now. The car is on sale with an optional service plan, and you can add go-faster stripes (reminiscent of the old Dazzle stickers fitted to the Y-series cars in the ‘70s, when Datsun was the market leader here for a brief spell), a roof rack, roof spoiler, and alloy wheels. We saw a car in an East Rand dealership with bigger wheels and tyres fitted and it looked a lot better than with the skinny wheels, but these 14-inch alloys plus bigger tyres would add about R8 000 to the cost.

All in all, a pleasant little car, and well priced, but once ABS and airbags are added around March 2015, as well as those few extras, you are looking at a price well over the magical R100 000 mark.

Hyundai Elantra 1.6 GLS (2014) Review

The Hyundai Elantra is an important model for the Korean automaker and when the fifth-generation Elantra launched in South Africa in 2011, it stirred the pot in the medium luxury sedan market with its attractive ‘fluidic sculpture’ design, comprehensive standard features and value-for-money appeal. In fact, it was such a good car it won the South African Car of the Year Award in 2012 and the North American Car of the Year Award.

Now in 2014, the Hyundai Elantra has received a number of exterior and interior enhancements to make it even better, but how good is it? I spent a few days with the Elantra 1.6 GLS to find out more.

Dressed to kill

One thing’s for sure, the updated Hyundai Elantra is dressed to kill its competition in the styling department, it’s that attractive. The Elantra’s wheelbase has remained the same while growing in length by 20mm. The front grille, headlights, fog lights and bumpers have been redesigned and chrome moulding along the beltline now accentuates the side profile.

Larger 17-inch, two-tone, alloy wheels replace the 16-inch alloys and add a touch of dynamism to the design. That low, coupe-like appearance with its edgy curves will ensure that the Hyundai Elantra holds its appeal.

Refined Interior

The ergonomics in the cabin are excellent with all the controls neatly placed. The luxury grey cloth seats offer comfortable seating for both front and rear passengers. The cabin is also spacious with ample leg, shoulder and head room and the family will also appreciate that large 485-litre boot which should easily swallow all your holiday luggage. If you really have to, you can also fold the 60:40 split seats down for even more space.

In terms of changes, the Hyundai Elantra 1.6 GLS features a simple audio system which now integrates Bluetooth, but sadly still doesn’t feature a Radio Data System (RDS), which can be frustrating. The central air vents have been re-positioned, now flanking the audio system on either side and the climate control interface has also taken on a new and improved look.

The side mirrors are electrically adjustable and the centre armrest has been raised for more comfort. The three-spoke steering wheel is rake and reach adjustable with mounted audio, Bluetooth and trip computer controls for added convenience.

Although Hyundai has done exceptionally well to create a comfortable and ergonomically sound cabin, features such as rear parking sensors and cruise control would have served this model well. Apart from that and the lack of RDS, the interior is outstanding with very little to fault.

Smooth Operator

Hiding beneath that bonnet is a 16-valve, four-cylinder 1.6-litre petrol engine that offers up 96 kW of power and 157 Nm of torque. The 2014 Hyundai Elantra is superbly quiet on the road and the smooth action six-speed manual transmission is a pleasure to use, effortlessly guiding every gear change with ease.

Hyundai has gone to great lengths to improve the driving experience by reducing noise and vibration in this updated Elantra model and it truly is a smooth operator.

The Hyundai Elantra delivers its power and torque in a civilized and refined manner. You never really have to force the Elantra to perform, it just does. For the driver, that means you can just sit back, relax and get on with it. Weighing in at 1 175kg, the Elantra isn’t heavy and the 1.6 engine does well to move the Elantra along at pace if need be. However, the Elantra isn’t really an engaging car to drive and some might consider the drive to be a bit boring. Nonetheless,  it’s an excellent cruiser that delivers a smooth and refined drive which is an attractive characteristic that will appeal to many.

In terms of fuel consumption, Hyundai claims 6.4L/100km on the combined cycle for this manual derivative. During the test period, I failed to get the Hyundai Elantra to budge below the 8L/100km mark, which is still decent.

Hyundai Elantra 1.6 GLS – Verdict

The facelifted Hyundai Elantra 1.6 GLS is a superb vehicle. The interior and exterior enhancements have elevated the Elantra to new heights and the level of refinement is impressive. Simply put, the Elantra is a pleasure to drive. Combine all these elements together along with an attractive price and Hyundai’s 5-year/150 000km warranty and suddenly you have a winner. You really can’t go wrong with this Korean beauty.

Second Opinion

The Hyundai Elantra has been a success story for the brand in South Africa and this update for 2014 sees the interior receive a few tweaks. Like the version which claimed a Car of the Year title in SA a few years back, this model has excellent ride quality, spacious cabin and it drives well. It definitely should be on your list when looking for an affordable sedan. – David Taylor

High Performance Land Rover Discovery Sport on the Cards

Car Advice is reporting that Land Rover is planning on introducing a high-performance version of the Discovery Sport that will rival the likes of the Audi SQ5.

Performance-oriented Discovery Sport

Speaking to Australian media at the 2014 Paris Motor Show, Murray Dietsch, director of programs, Land Rover, hinted that a diesel-powered sporty variant of the recently unveiled Discovery Sport might be on the cards.

Land Rover design director Gerry McGovern further confirmed that the company is working on flagship variants for every model across its three pillars – Discovery, Range Rover and Defender.

In addition, McGovern said that these special editions and personalisation’s need to be congruent with what that particular family is about. For example, “special editions for Discovery’s should talk to some degree the versatility of that family, if it’s Defender it’s the durability and dual-purposes of those vehicles, and if it’s Range Rover it’s the sophistication and execution.”

“What we’re trying to do is give the consumer more choice, but to do it in a way that maintains the integrity of the brand.”

The first of these special variants to launch will be the Range Rover Sport SVR, which will start reaching South African customers in early 2015 with prices starting at an estimated R1.7 million.

Toyota 86 Successor Confirmed

The Toyota 86 was one of the most hyped cars of all time, hailed as the return of sportiness to the Toyota brand after years of bland and dreary. However, according to Toyota, sales have not been up to scratch globally but the brand still has plans to build a successor.

Toyota 86 Under Performing Globally

In an interview, Toyota of Europe’s Executive Vice President, Karl Schlicht hinted that the 86 was underperforming, but that Toyota wants to keep sporty models in the lineup, ‘The 86 as you know has been enthusiastically received by the motoring press, but the market’s not huge around the world for those kind of cars and they also have a bit of a lifecycle. So as a business it’s tougher to justify.’

Schlicht did confirm that the 86 would live on in the future ‘we are pretty serious about keeping the 86 pure and keeping a car like that in our lineup. Because in the past we dropped cars like the Celicas and fun cars, and we don’t want to lose that again.’

He was unable to be pushed for a date for the successor but as with all models, the Toyota 86 will have to go through a full life-cycle.

In a tight finish between the Mazda 2 and the Mercedes Benz C-Class, the Mazda 2 compact hatchback scored 423 points to win Japan’s Car of the Year by just 19 points. The C-Class finished second with 404 points.

Mazda 2 Wins Close Battle

In a tightly fought contest, the Mazda 2 claimed the maximum 10 points from 22 of the 59 jurors while the C-Class picked up 10 points from 18 jurors. Each juror is allocated 25 points, must give 10 points to their best car and spread their remaining 15 points among their next best four cars.
