What are we looking for?

In this category you will find the type of cars that realistic dreams are made off. We’re looking for an aspirational vehicle that will appeal to the image-conscious driver who places a priority on performance, dynamics, technology and design. The target customers have achieved success and want a car that isn’t only a personal reward, but also one which broadcasts their achievements.

Which cars are eligible?

Its listed price must be between R400 000 and R700 000 at the time of semi-finalist voting (June 17, 2015) to ensure a healthy measure of prestige. The fitment of required optional extras must collectively not push the price over R700 000.

Six airbags – (if optional, the price of these items, together with all other options, must not push the total price over R700 000.)

ESP (Electronic Stability Control) – (if not fitted as standard, this feature must be available as an optional extra and fitted).

Most important judging factors

Powertrain technology – (a balance of efficiency and engine power/torque band/performance is required, with a slant towards the latter.)

Luxury – (features such as electrically adjustable seats, leather upholstery, full info-tainment systems, dual-zone climate control are rewarded.)

Brand strength – (preference for established premium brands with a proven track record; includes peace of mind that comes from a large servicing network, resale value, a strong warranty, length of service plan etc.)

Design & quality appeal – (a large measure of desirability and upmarket build is required)

Driving dynamics – (although these cars must be comfortable daily drivers, they must also offer a large measure of "petrolhead" appeal, ie. driving enjoyment/handling/engaging dynamics.)

Technology – (advanced features such as touch-screen info-tainment, app integration, active cruise control, active braking etc. are rewarded)

Want to have a say?

We appreciate and recognise the fact that owners are the ultimate judges of cars, as they live with them (and the people that provide the backup) on a daily basis. For that reason, we launched a comprehensive Ownership Satisfaction Survey a few months ago to gain insight into what owners say of their vehicles and after-sales service experiences. By completing this survey, you will have real impact on the Awards programme. This year, voting has already taken place in the individual product categories, but your input can still significantly impact the prestigious Brand of the Year category.

Mercedes-Benz C250 AMG Sports

BMW 428i Gran Coupe Sport sports auto

BMW's 3 Series is a common sight in office parks around the world and its easy to understand why. It's a great car, after all. But what if you like the dynamics, quality and engines of the BMW 3, but want something with a bit more individuality? That's where the 4 Series Gran Coupe comes in… The 428i doesn't only offer a more attractive and unique design, but the fitment of that sloping tailgate has actually improved versatility too. Packing a 2,0-litre turbo with 180kW, performance is graceful and has plenty of punch. BMW offers loads of options for this vehicle, so the price escalates very quickly. As standard (with the Sport package) it is a bit thin on surprise and delight features, but at least items such as rear park sensors, cruise control, radio/CD with Bluetooth/aux/USB are all included. Items such as cruise control, climate control, leather upholstery, auto lights/wipers all contribute to a very comfortable cabin environment that is unlikely to make you feel short-changed. BMW is a very desirable brand in the new car market in South Africa, and this popularity carries over to the used car market. Keep in mind however, that a 4 Series Gran Coupe is somewhat of a niche choice, so it is hard to predict resale values exactly, also because of the very long optional features list.

Do you own a BMW? Tell us about your experience to have real input into the Cars.co.za Consumer Awards programme.

Test Team Opinion

“BMW’s model line-up may be very confusing at present, with what appears to be a whole lot of overlap, but the 4 Series Gran Coupe somehow seems to combine the best of all of them.” Hannes Oosthuizen

“This is what the BMW 3 Series should have always been. Exceptionally pretty, but still retaining that executive and luxury feel. BMW has a lot of models in its 3 and 4 Series ranges, but this is the one that ticks all the boxes.” David Taylor

“The 4 Series Gran Coupe makes for a very sexy 3 Series. It still has all the dynamic genius of the 3 but with a bit more beauty.” Ashley Oldfield

Audi S3 quattro S tronic

You'd think an Audi A4 would be the logical choice here, but that's about to be replaced. Instead, we've gone with the S3 sedan – a potent and classy executive. Powered by a cracker of an engine, and combined with quattro all-wheel drive and that excellent S-tronic gearbox, performance is fantastic. The S3 offers a comprehensive package that also includes an audio system with Bluetooth streaming functionality. Most of the on-board functionality is controlled via Audi’s MMI system, linked to an attractive retractable 5,8-inch colour screen. Items such as auto lights/wipers and cruise control are indeed included as standard too. Like all Audi A3 models, the S3’s interior displays a minimalist design theme that actually contributes to the feeling of upmarket luxury. Given the fact that the S3 is essentially the flagship A3, it benefits from the most features, including auto lights/wipers, cruise control, sports seats trimmed in a fine leather/cloth combination and an auto-dimming rear-view mirror. Of course, there are always options to choose from. Although the warranty (1 year/unlimited km) looks meagre, keep in mind that a comprehensive five-years/100 000 km maintenance plan is standard.

Do you own an Audi? Tell us about your experience to have real input into the Cars.co.za Consumer Awards programme.

Test Team Opinion

“For the successful young executive that is also a driving enthusiast, the Audi S3 makes a lot of sense. It looks the part, goes like the clappers and feels immensely solid.” Hannes Oosthuizen

“Despite its performance bias, the S3 sedan is a remarkably composed premium offering. It offers luxury touches both inside and out, and when your heart desires, you can enjoy sportscar-like performance.” David Taylor

“Audi’s S3 is stylish and performance oriented. If you’re the businessman (or woman) who likes a bit of performance on the drive to and from the office, this hits all the right buttons.” Ashley Oldfield

Mercedes-Benz C250 AMG Sports

With a World Car of the Year title under its belt, the new C-Class can’t be ignored in this segment. We’ve selected the C250 AMG Sports model, as it combines the brand’s lively 2,0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine (shared with Infiniti) with sporty AMG detailing, all at a very good price. The standard specification is reasonable, but for the really tasty technology you have to spend extra. It is thus in the C250 – PreSafe is standard, as is a comprehensive audio system with Bluetooth support and even two USB ports. There’s also that very attractive TFT control screen that is nearly 18 cm wide. The C-Class takes what is best about the S-Class, and makes it available to a broader public. Indeed, step into the C-Class interior and you will be forgiven for thinking that you’re inside something much more expensive. Is there a stronger brand than Mercedes-Benz? Probably not… The C-Class itself is one of the most desirable buys in the local market, so resale value should be good. The 2 years/unlimited km warranty is backed by a 6 years/100 000 km maintenance plan.

Do you own a Mercedes-Benz? Tell us about your experience to have real input into the Cars.co.za Consumer Awards programme.

Test Team Opinion

“The C-Class is the king of the compact executive cars, and in C250 AMG Sport guise the desirability is really heightened. Beware the options list, though!” Hannes Oosthuizen

“Mercedes’s C-Class has really moved the segment forward. The engine is superb, the tech is unbelievable and the entire package offers so much. It’s a really difficult car to fault and it is a class act all round.” David Taylor

“This is a car that takes refinement, luxury and comfort to the next level. The C-Class ticks all the right boxes a premium sedan needs.” Ashley Oldfield

Five Most Watched Videos in 2015

With more than four million views in the past 12 months, our Youtube channel is the place to go for the latest car reviews and fun motoring content. Which videos did you like most this past year?

BMW X5 M50d versus Range Rover Sport Supercharged V8 (777 500+ views)

This is our most popular video and perhaps understandably so. It set the benchmark for our drag races and at the time pitting a diesel SUV against a petrol rival was quite controversial. Despite the Range Rover Sport winning, we think the tri-turbo diesel BMW acquitted itself very well considering it has a much smaller engine and is diesel powered.

Drag Race: VW Golf 7 R vs Subaru STI (733 930+ views)

This was an eye-opening video as the Subaru STI has always been seen as the king of the traffic light grand prix. Advances in turbo engines and all-wheel drive systems have meant that most hatchbacks are able to keep pace with the iconic Japanese super saloon. Would a simple Golf be able to match the Subaru? Then again… the Golf R is no ordinary Golf…

Drag Race: VW Golf 7 R vs Mercedes A 45 AMG (460 710+ views)

Mercedes-Benz claims its A45 AMG is the world's fastest hatchback and we put it to the test against the very nimble Volkswagen Golf R. 2.0-litre turbo against 2.0-litre turbo, all-wheel drive versus all-wheel drive… which wins?

BMW 3 Series vs BMW 4 Series – Which Should You Buy? (214 000+ views)

The BMW 3 Series is the near default choice for premium sedans, especially if you're a driving enthusiast, but the BMW 4-Series Gran Coupe makes for a very eye-catching alternative. What are the differences between the two? Which one should you buy? Ciro de Siena brings you the lowdown.

Drag Race: BMW X6 M vs Mercedes-AMG GLE63 S Coupe (209 000+ views)

It's a big clash of German might as the BMW X6 M takes on the Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S Coupe. Both are turbocharged and offer all-wheel drive meaning fearsome off-the-line performance. They're both exceptionally fast for SUVs and faster than most hot hatchbacks. There can only be one winner though.

Cars Consumer Awards: Best Premium Hatchback

What are we looking for?

Stylish and sophisticated yet practical enough for most motoring needs, these are the cars for the upwardly mobile go-getter. The winner in this category must not only offer outstanding quality, refinement, performance and the latest technologies, but also broadcast a message of success and ambition.

Which Cars are Eligible?

Its listed price must exceed R300 000 but not R500 000 at the time of semi-finalist voting (June 17, 2015) to ensure a large measure of desirability and prestige.

It must offer a hatchback (five-door) body shape of C-segment size (A3/1 Series/A-Class etc.) Crossover hatch derivatives are also included.

ESP (Electronic Stability Control) – (if not fitted as standard, this feature must be available as an optional extra and fitted, without exceeding the R500 000 price limit).

Dual front, side and curtain airbags – (if not fitted as standard, these features must be available and fitted as optional extras within the set maximum price).

Most Important Judging Factors

Powertrain technology – (a balance of efficiency and engine power/torque band/performance is required.)

Practicality – (cabin space, boot space, general accessibility, folding seats etc.)

Brand strength – (preference for established premium brands with a proven track record; includes peace of mind that comes from a large servicing network, resale value, a strong warranty, length of service plan etc.)

Ride/handling – (although these cars must be comfortable daily drivers, they must also offer a measure of "petrolhead" appeal, ie. driving enjoyment/handling/engaging dynamics.)

Safety – (beyond the Filter eligibility features listed above, incl. extra airbags, Isofix, active driver support systems etc.)

In-car Entertainment & Connectivity – (features such as premium sound systems, numbers of speakers, navigation, Bluetooth streaming, USB/Aux, app integration etc.)

The Finalists

Volkswagen Golf GTI DSG
Mercedes-Benz GLA200 CDI Automatic
BMW 120i 5-dr M Sport Auto

Volkswagen Golf GTI DSG

Given the premium badges of the other finalists in this category, you may think a "mere" Golf would be outgunned. However, in GTI guise this Volkswagen offers more than enough badge appeal and desirability. Importantly, it is also as well built as the best of its more prestigious rivals. The 2.0-litre turbo engine in the GTI makes it the most powerful in this category and that DSG transmission remains one of the best of its type. If it's a combination of easy daily driveability and exhilarating performance you’re after, the GTI is very hard to beat. Despite the boy racer label, the latest Golf GTI is a well-packaged hatchback which offers great practicality too, thanks to a generously sized boot as well as plentiful legroom. Volkswagen ticks most of the safety boxes by offering a full house of seven airbags and the brand is well represented across South Africa. Resale values are strong.

Do you own a Volkswagen Golf? Tell us about your experience to have real input into the Cars.co.za Consumer Awards programme.

Test Team Opinion

“If you’re looking for an upmarket, sophisticated hatchback with a real performance streak, then the Golf GTI offers the perfect package. It is a truly excellent all-rounder.” Hannes Oosthuizen

“The Golf GTI is a firm favourite in SA thanks to its strong performance bias without sacrificing on ride quality or premium feel. Once you get behind the wheel you can’t help but be impressed by the way it masters all facets of an upmarket hatchback.” Ashley Oldfield

“It may be popular amongst the boy racers, but there’s no denying the premium and luxury ability that the Golf GTI delivers in bucket loads. The latest incarnation offers more all-roundedness than performance, which gives it a maturity factor that other hot hatches lack.” David Taylor

Mercedes-Benz GLA200 CDI Automatic

Why GLA over A-Class you ask? Simply put, the pre-facelift A-class is bested by its GLA sibling in two important areas, namely ride refinement and practicality. Then there's also the degree of rugged "crossover" appeal that further elevates the desirability of the GLA. The 2.1-litre diesel engine combines well with a seven-speed dual-clutch 'box to deliver a smooth drive as well as good economy. Boasting a neat free-standing screen as standard, the GLA can be further personalised by delving into a very extensive optional extras list. That said, a radio/CD system with Bluetooth support is standard. Mercedes-Benz is arguably still the strongest premium brand in South Africa, so resale and support are hardly concerning.

Do you own a Mercedes-Benz A/GLA? Tell us about your experience to have real input into the Cars.co.za Consumer Awards programme.

Test Team Opinion

“To be fair, the GLA is more of a raised hatchback than a crossover SUV, but that’s not a problem. In fact, it is one of the most appealing models in the Mercedes line-up at present! ” Hannes Oosthuizen

“The GLA stands out more than a regular A-Class plus the ride is less bumpy and more cosseting. It’s a good choice if you want a bit more practicality out of your premium hatch.” Ashley Oldfield

“Mercedes’s GLA is the best incarnation of the A-series of products. A combination of a slightly raised ground clearance, good engine, interior space and pretty looks make this a very desirable offering.” David Taylor

BMW 120i 5-dr M Sport Auto

Recently refreshed, the BMW 1 Series now offers slicker styling and a host of advanced technology features (some standard, some optional), that will really please the technophile. This being a BMW, however, driving entertainment is important and the turbocharged 1,6-litre engine certainly doesn’t disappoint in terms of performance and economy. Fitted as standard is an infotainment system that includes Bluetooth, USB and aux support. More sophisticated sound systems are available from R5 400. BMW offers a very comprehensive safety package for the 120i, and it even includes active cruise control as standard. The BMW badge is hard to resist for more performance-oriented buyers and the dealership footprint is considerable.

Do you own a BMW 1-Series? Tell us about your experience to have real input into the Cars.co.za Consumer Awards programme.

Test Team Opinion

“For the driving enthusiast the BMW 1 Series remains a highpoint in the premium hatchback landscape. Increasingly, however, its talents extend further than just dynamics. This is a very solid all-rounder, too.” Hannes Oosthuizen

“The looks are certainly more polarising than the Audi A3 but the 1 Series harnesses a responsive turbocharged engine with an athletic drive to produce an excellent driving machine.” Ashley Oldfield

Cars Awards: Game Changer of the Year

The winners in the first annual Cars.co.za Consumer Awards will be announced at a glittering event on January 14th. With the finish line in sight, these are the three excellent contenders in the Game changer of the year category that are battling it out for the prestigious prize. Which one should get the trophy?

What are we looking for?

Whether we’re talking sales volumes, technology, brand perception or simply vast improvement, game changing products have one thing in common – they’ve made a significant impact. Once again, SUVs and crossovers are prominent in our selection of finalists, but they’re here for very different reasons.

Which cars are eligible?

2015 model – It must have been launched onto the South African market during 2015

Innovation – The judges considered all new arrivals, with the brief to identify vehicles that have made an impact in some way or another – this can be in sales volumes, new technologies, brand perception etc.

Ford Everest

Ford Everest

South Africans love bakkie-based SUVs, with the Toyota Fortuner, even in the twilight of its career, still being among the top sellers on the market. Ford’s Everest has scarcely made a dent in the market, being outdated, outclassed and massively outsold by its big rival. But all of that could change now. The new Ford Everest is such a massive step forward that it actually deserves a new name. Rarely, these days, does a new product represent such a big advance over what it replaces.

Ride refinement: While basing an SUV on the chassis of a bakkie has advantages for off-roading ability (and costs), the reality is that such a vehicle often feels harsh, bumpy and roly-poly on the road. The Everest sets a new segment benchmark, with its coil-sprung rear set-up serving up near-unibody levels of ride refinement on the road. And once you head into the rough stuff, there’s still enough bakkie in its DNA to outclass the more city oriented SUVs.

Advanced technologies: The new Everest brings very advanced features into the bakkie-SUV segment for the first time, including such technologies as cross-traffic alert, blind-spot monitoring, hands-free parallel parking, adaptive cruise control and lane-keep assist, among many others.

Spacious, practical cabin: The vast cabin and clever packaging result in a proper seven seater. Even adults can sit comfortably in the third row. There are also some nifty features, such as the ability to fold the third row into the floor electrically. In the front of the cabin the attention focuses on the Ford’s latest SYNC 2 info-tainment touch-screen system.

Do you own a Ford? Tell us about your experience to have real input into the Cars.co.za Consumer Awards programme.

Test Team Opinion

“In an age where a new model typically represents a small step forward from its predecessor, the Ford Everest stands out because it has vaulted the Blue Oval clean to the front of its class. Even if you take its outdated predecessor out of the equation, the newcomer still establishes benchmarks for ride refinement, comfort and technology so high that future rivals will have to be very good indeed to match it. That makes it a true game changer in my book.” – Hannes Oosthuizen.

“The new Ford Everest brings a level of technology and comfort features unheard of before to the bakkie-SUV segment. It's rugged and capable off-road but from behind the wheel it feels more like a premium SUV. It certainly ups the safety levels in the segment too with excellent active and passive features available.” Ashley Oldfield

BMW i3

The BMW i3 is not the first electric car to go on sale in South Africa, but it could just be the product to jolt the electric revolution into motion. With its revolutionary architecture, sci-fi design and overall quality the i3 already shoulders its way into the limelight, and that’s before you even experience the drive. Quick off the mark and remarkably refined, you’ll be amazed at how quickly it fits into your lifestyle. Couple all of this with the desirability of the BMW brand, and you have a very convincing trailblazer for the electric car era.

LifeDrive architecture: Unlike some other electric car offerings, the i3 is not based on the platform of an existing internal combustion powered vehicle. Instead, the LifeDrive architecture is based on a flat floor (incorporating the powertrain), with a super strong passenger cell mounted on top and made from advanced materials such as carbon fibre. Instead of hiding its unique construction, BMW celebrates it by leaving many of the most important details exposed – such as the carbon fibre weave, visible in the door sills.

Charge infrastructure: BMW and Nissan have teamed up to develop the electric car charging infrastructure in South Africa. This crucial move should accelerate the acceptance of electric cars in South Africa.

Eco-friendliness: The single-minded pursuit of efficiency and eco-friendliness is also evident inside, where the minimalism is celebrated by the use of excellent materials – KENAF, for example, is a member of the cotton family and very sustainable. Then there’s also the fact that the factory that builds the i3 is 100% powered by electricity generated from sustainable sources.

Do you own a BMW? Tell us about your experience to have real input into the Cars.co.za Consumer Awards programme.

Test Team Opinion

“Right now I would say the BMW i3 is the single most important car I’ve driven in 15 years of doing this job. I can’t give it higher praise than that. It is exactly the type of car that is needed to break down barriers to greater electric car acceptance. And the design… well, that actually plays a big part in its desirability. It is extremely bold. Very confident. And I like it very, very much” –Hannes Oosthuizen

“Perhaps it's the radical choice of materials – much of the interior is recycled and the textiles are bamboo – that inspired the i3's designers to break so drastically from convention, but the i3's interior is the freshest I've seen in a decade. It feels like a concept car that escaped from the design studio before anyone could make it dull. The i3 offers is a wonderfully modern, comfortable cabin to commute in, and hopefully all BMWs (and cars in general) will look and feel like this in the future…” Ciro de Siena

Volvo XC90

It’s not often that a new vehicle arrives to such universal acclaim as the Volvo XC90. With a string of international awards in the trophy cabinet already, the XC90 looks set to add to the collection in the Cars.co.za Consumer Awards, as it is nominated in no fewer than three categories. With its high-tech new line-up of four-cylinder engines, superb cabin design and build quality, it is more than merely another premium SUV, it is a brand perception changer.

Brave engine direction: Big, premium SUVs usually make use of large-capacity engines. Volvo, however, has made the bold decision to equip the XC90 with 2,0-litre four-cylinder engines only. Turbocharging, supercharging and hybrid technology is applied to extract performance and the upshot is greater efficiency when not using the maximum power. Not many other companies have embraced the down-sizing trend to quite the same extent.

Sensus Touch-interface: Pride of place in the XC90’s cabin goes to a large iPad-like touch-screen info-tainment system mounted in the centre of the facia. Not only does it de-clutter the cabin significantly, it arguably establishes a new benchmark in user-friendliness. Today’s smartphone users will find its pinch and swipe functionality very useful. Plus, it looks great!

Diamond-cut controls: The refreshingly different cabin uses only top-notch materials, with the gearlever, for example, being crystal glass from Orrefors. It is, however, the feel of the start/stop button and volume control knob that further heightens the ambience. These were diamond cut.

Do you own a Volvo? Tell us about your experience to have real input into the Cars.co.za Consumer Awards programme.

Test Team Opinion

“The XC90 is not the sort of car I should be excited about. I'm 29, I have no kids, and I only ever venture into the countryside for wine tasting. And yet, it is a car I would happily drive everyday. It is incredibly comfortable and the touchscreen infotainment system is as good as everyone says it is. It also just looks damn good." -Ciro De Siena

“The XC90 is one of those cars that came to South Africa so heaped with praise I was rather worried it would fail to live up to expectations. Impressively, it has managed to surpass them. It’s a vehicle that exudes quiet confidence and charm and the cabin really raises the bar, not only in terms of design, but also with regards to the selection of materials.” Hannes Oosthuizen

Cars Awards: Family Car

What are we looking for?

The typical family car fulfils a wide variety of duties and needs to be a practical, safe all-rounder. In judging this category we’ve placed particular emphasis on interior flexibility, comfort and safety.

The Finalists

Nissan X-Trail 2,0 XE
Citroen C4 Picasso e-HDI Intensive
Volkswagen Golf SV 1,4 TSI Comfortline

Nissan X-Trail 2,0 XE

Finding a spacious compact SUV/crossover at this price level that also offers a good standard specification level and excellent build quality is difficult enough. Now add the requirement for seven seats and it’s all but impossible. The Nissan X-Trail does all of the above and consequently could just be the ideal family car for all eventualities. With a combined cycle fuel consumption figure of 8,3 L/100 km, the X-Trail 2,0 XE offers acceptable fuel economy. With lots of space and plenty of adjustability on offer from all of the seats, going on a long trip in an X-Trail is unlikely to be an uncomfortable one, no matter where you end up sitting (except for the optional, and small third row). There are plenty of comfort-boosting features as standard, including cruise control, a comprehensive sound system and ventilation outlets for rear (second-row) passengers. Six airbags, an electronic stability programme and Isofix child seat anchors are all included in the X-Trail’s standard package.

Do you own a Nissan? Tell us about your experience to have real input into the Cars.co.za Consumer Awards programme.

Test Team Opinion

“If you need occasional seven-seat capability, then the X-Trail should be the vehicle you test drive first. It’s an exceptionally well balanced offering.” Hannes Oosthuizen

“Sometimes you need seven seats to get your family around. The X-Trail can do that and manage it in a soft but comfortable manner.” Ashley Oldfield

“If space is what you’re after then look no further. Nissan’s X-Trail offers a lot of space and adequate performance, and if you’re needing something that offers seven seats, then this should be on your list.” David Taylor

Citroen C4 Picasso e-HDI Intensive

With its bizarre styling the Citroën C4 Picasso undoubtedly competes at the periphery of the South African car market, but it deserves much more serious consideration. It puts a very interesting spin on the traditional (largely conservative) MPV concept, offers high-tech features, a frugal engine and a very clever cabin, too. Plus, Citroën is working very hard to up after-sales support. The engine also delivers exceptional fuel economy. Citroën claims an astonishingly low 4,0 L/100 km consumption, which translates to a range of around 1 375 on a full tank (55 L). The C4 Picasso presents everything that is exceptional about MPV packaging. Not only is the boot big (537 L) with the rear seats moved all the way back, but it can grow to 630 L by pushing the seats forward if rear legroom is not that important. The rear seats are three individual chairs that can be folded in multiple ways to further boost flexibility. Folded out of the way, a total of 1 851 L storage space is on offer. Citroen’s attention to detail and generous standard specification levels further contribute to all-round comfort levels, plus the vehicle is safe too with six airbags, Isofix child seat anchors and electronic stability control, it also features hill-start assist, front/rear park sensors and a rear-view camera.

Test Team Opinion

“I like what Citroën has done here – true individualism married with great practicality.” Hannes Oosthuizen

“This C4 Picasso has to be one of the most fun cars to look at and play around with once you sit in it. There’s loads of useful tech, comfort and roominess.” Ashley Oldfield

“If there was an award for most futuristic-looking car, this would win. There’s nothing quite like it and the rest of the package is pretty decent too. There’s a lot of tech in here, as well as plenty of interior space. It’s a fantastic interpretation of a family car.” David Taylor

Volkswagen Golf SV 1,4 TSI Comfortline

If you don’t find a traditional MPV appealing, prefer the style and dynamics of a hatchback, but need extra space and flexibility, then Volkswagen’s very practical and stylish new Golf SV could be the answer. It rides on the same dynamically capable platform of the Golf 7, yet the bigger body serves up amazing space and practicality, including sliding rear seats. olkswagen claims a very good 5,4 L/100 km in the combined cycle for this Golf SV and its powered by the trusty turbocharged 1,4-litre petrol engine. Inside, it is the upmarket materials and excellent fit and finish that impress most. If you want to smarten it up even further, you can opt for items such as a panoramic sunroof (R9 200) or leather upholstery (R11 500). Like the Golf 7 on which it is based, the Golf SV offers a very safe package. It offers the required ESP (electronic stability system), ABS/EBD and six airbags, but goes further by adding rear Isofix child seat mounts, a driver’s knee airbag and tyre pressure monitoring.

Do you own a Volkswagen? Tell us about your experience to have real input into the Cars.co.za Consumer Awards programme.

Test Team Opinion

“I particularly admire the flexibility offered by the sliding rear seats. The boot is usefully large and rear legroom is good, too. Furthermore, it feels every bit as sprightly as a ‘normal’ Golf 7.” Hannes Oosthuizen

“I was very impressed with the premium feel and ride quality of the Golf SV. It has huge space both in terms of boot space and rear passenger legroom, and the engine is smooth, yet responsive.” David Taylor

“If you don’t see a need for an SUV and loading space practicality is right at the forefront of your requirements then the Golf SV caters well. The SV also feels solid on the road and extremely well-built. It’s typically Volkswagen.” Ashley Oldfield

The winners in the first annual Cars.co.za Consumer Awards will be announced at a glittering event on January 14th. With the finish line in sight, these are the three excellent contenders in the Budget Car category that are battling it out for the prestigious prize. Which one should get the trophy?

For more information on the Cars Awards and the judging panel, head to CarsAwards.co.za

What are we looking for?

As the cost of living continues to rise, budgets are becoming tighter. But that doesn't mean you should settle for anything cheap and nasty. Despite the name, a budget car shouldn't skimp on quality, technology and safety. The finalists here all represent excellent value for money. We're looking for the best car that R150 000 can buy.

Which cars are eligible?

Its listed price must not exceed R150 000 at the time of semi-finalist voting (June 17, 2015). This price must include all accessories/options deemed as requirements for eligibility in this category.

ABS braking – (if not fitted as standard, the cost of this, together with other required options, must not push the price of the vehicle over R150 000 at the time of voting).

Dual front airbags – (if not fitted as standard, the cost of this, together with other required options, must not push the price of the vehicle over R150 000 at the time of voting).

Service Plan – (if not fitted as standard, the cost of this, together with other required options, must not push the price of the vehicle over R150 000 at the time of voting).

Most important judging factors

Fuel Economy – (based on NEDC combined cycle L/100 km)

Value for money – (comfort features such as air-conditioning, power steering and a sound system etc. score valuable points.)

Practicality – (cabin space, boot space, general accessibility, folding seats etc.)

Brand strength – (preference for established brands with a proven track record; includes peace of mind that comes from a large servicing network, resale value, a strong warranty, length of service plan etc.)

The Finalists

Suzuki Swift 1,2 GL
Volkswagen Take up!
Renault Sandero Expression

Suzuki Swift 1,2 GL

The Suzuki Swift is a very underrated vehicle that has much going for it. It is a B-segment hatchback which is priced extremely competitively and comes with a whole host of standard features. The perky 1.2-litre engine is able to match most of the turbocharged brigade and aside from delivering a fun drive, is also rather frugal. One of the big positives of the Swift is its build quality and owners speak highly of the overall satisfaction levels. No wonder then that Suzuki is one of South Africa's fastest growing brands.

Do you own a Suzuki Swift? Tell us about your experience to have real input into the Cars.co.za Consumer Awards programme.

Test Team Opinion

“Perhaps the Swift is overlooked by the local market simply because people don’t expect to find such a good car at such a low price point? Unlikely… but whatever the reason, consider this well-kept secret now out.” Hannes Oosthuizen

“The Swift feels like it should be in a more expensive category, it’s a really good drive and feels well-built inside and out. It doesn’t skimp on safety and features either.” Ashley Oldfield

“The Suzuki Swift is one of the most underrated cars and it’s really fun to drive. While the boot space may be on the small size, this car is overall very tough to beat.” David Taylor

Volkswagen Take up!

The Volkswagen up! is here because it brings suprising practicality, slick design and that famed Volkswagen build quality to the budget segment. It features a 1.0-litre engine which offers spritely performance and frugal fuel consumption. It may not offer as comprehensive a specification package as the Suzuki Swift, but Volkswagen's options list is affordable meaning you can effortlessly bring it up to top spec and remain under the R150 000 barrier. The major feather in the cap is safety, with the Volkswagen up! having the bonus of side airbags fitted alongside the standard driver/passenger units. Despite it's three-door setup, the cabin is deceptively spacious and the double-tiered boot means it boasts good levels of cargo carrying ability. Volkswagen is one of SA's most-loved brands and the little up! has plenty of backup and support.

Do you own a Volkswagen up!? Tell us about your experience to have real input into the Cars.co.za Consumer Awards programme.

Test Team Opinion

“The up! brings something different to the budget car segment and will appeal to a more youthful buyer. Yet it is not as compromised a product as you may think.” Hannes Oosthuizen

“The Volkswagen up! brings a touch of style and funk to the budget car market. It’s good to drive as well.” Ashley Oldfield

“It’s a pity the up! was introduced so late to SA as I believe that its build quality and European compact styling will win it many fans. Quite easily the cutest car in its segment and despite its two-door setup, interior space isn’t cramped.” David Taylor

Renault Sandero Expression

The Sandero offers excellent levels of specification and safety, and it's the only finalist boasting a turbocharged engine. It's also one of the cheapest cars of its size on sale, meaning a bargain is on the cards. There's a comprehensive radio with Bluetooth/Aux/USB connectivity, cruise control with limiter, and on the safety front, ESP and ISOfix mountings come standard. Air conditioning is a surprise omission, but at R10 000, it's a worthwhile option. With five doors and a large boot, it's arguably one of the biggest and most practical cars in its class. Renault has tried its hardest to undo the quality and service issues of the past and offers the longest warranty in this class as well as a service plan thrown in.

Do you own a Renault Sandero? Tell us about your experience to have real input into the Cars.co.za Consumer Awards programme.

Test Team Opinion

“At the price it is really hard to fault this offering. I particularly like the focus on safety features, the comprehensive audio system and the long warranty.” Hannes Oosthuizen

“The Sandero 2 returned as a more modern and solid offering. Despite its keen price, it still manages to maintain excellent levels of standard safety equipment and in-car entertainment.” Ashley Oldfield

“The Renault Sandero is a well-equipped and spacious city car. Combined with a lengthy and comprehensive warranty, the Sandero is one of the most sensible offerings in the segment.” David Taylor

The Finalists

Ford Focus Hatch 1,0T Trend
Opel Corsa 1,0T Enjoy
Honda Jazz 1,5 Elegance

Ford Focus Hatch 1,0T Trend

Why is the bigger Ford Focus here you ask, instead of the Fiesta that is roughly the same size as the other two finalists? Essentially, it comes down to our price barrier of R250 000. This Focus offers astonishing value and performance for the money, as well as C-segment features and space at B-segment pricing, something we just couldn't ignore. Powered by the acclaimed 1,0-litre EcoBoost engine, the Focus offers an appealing mix of power and performance. The rest of the package is also excellent as it offers a spread of comfort, info-tainment and safety features that compare well with the smaller, similarly priced cars it competes with here. Included is an excellent audio system, rake/reach-adjustable steering and cruise control. Ford is doing good things and the Focus is a global success story. The brand is increasingly regarded as a viable rival to Toyota and Volkswagen, but it doesn't quite have the same reputation for after-sales-service.

Do you own a Ford Focus? Tell us about your experience to have real input into the Cars.co.za Consumer Awards programme.

Test Team Opinion

“Ford must have sharpened its pencils an awful lot to offer this much car at this low a price. The Focus offers a very strong spread of talents. I’m not sure this price can last very long!” Hannes Oosthuizen

“Right now the Focus is an outright steal. It’s amazing that so much car is available at the same price as smaller cars in the segment below.” Ashley Oldfield

“The Focus has snuck in here purely on its price. It blasts the others out the water in terms of pricing as you’re getting a big car for small car money. That engine is just lovely too.” David Taylor

Opel Corsa 1,0T Enjoy

Armed with arguably the finest 1.0-litre turbo engine and a myriad of technology, it's hard to overlook the latest generation of Opel Corsa. For the money, the standard features package is comprehensive too, with comfort items for the driver being particularly well taken care of. The Corsa's boot is competitively sized and offers 60/40 folding seats. It's also packed with safety features such as six airbags and ISOfix child seat mounts. Opel has not had it easy over the past few years, but the raft of new product coming out can only mean good things. The Corsa comes with a decent warranty and service plan, and the General Motors dealership footprint is considerable too.

Do you own a Opel Corsa? Tell us about your experience to have real input into the Cars.co.za Consumer Awards programme.

Test Team Opinion

“The new Corsa is one of those cars that don’t immediately bowl you over, but grows on you with time. This bodes well for long-term ownership satisfaction.” Hannes Oosthuizen

“Sharing the same swooping fascia and touchscreen as the uber-trendy Adam, the interior overall is the car’s highlight, with options like a self-parking aid being quite impressive in this segment.” Ciro de Siena

“Opel’s new 1-Litre turbo engine is an absolute gem, and easily the pick of the bunch. The Corsa too makes a good case for itself, especially in the safety department.” Ashley Oldfield

“That engine is easily the best 1,0-litre engine around and the latest Opel Corsa comes to market with some great tech. It’s a modern car that can do it all, for a not-too-silly amount of money.” David Taylor

Honda Jazz 1,5 Elegance

Honda's Jazz has a reputation for owner satisfaction, practicality and reliability. The latest version continues to offer these talents, but in a more modern package. Honda continues to swim against prevailing market trends by sticking to naturally-aspirated motors and, in reality, the 1,5-litre motor is adequate in terms of performance and outputs. In this specification, the Jazz is pricey, but then you have to factor in the spacious cabin, peace-of-mind as well as a comprehensive standard features package that includes a very up-to-date infotainment system, a full complement of airbags and even cruise control. Honda is one of the most trusted brands in the market and the Jazz has always performed brilliantly in customer satisfaction surveys all over the world.

Do you own a Honda Jazz? Tell us about your experience to have real input into the Cars.co.za Consumer Awards programme.

Test Team Opinion

“By most measurable factors the Jazz is one of the best cars on the market, so you can’t go wrong here, especially if your priorities are reliability and all-round versatility.” Hannes Oosthuizen

“With those genius rear seat gymnastics it must be one of the most practical cars on the market. It is the car I recommend most to car buyers, but with its bulletproof reliability record, I almost always recommend a used example.” Ciro de Siena

“The Honda Jazz is a firm favourite around the world. It is impressively practical for a compact hatchback and offers built-in peace of mind with the purchase.” Ashley Oldfield

“The Jazz epitomises what this segment stands for. A compact car with lots of features, huge space and reliability is a strong contender and the Jazz does all of this pretty well.” David Taylor

Five Apps For That Perfect Roadtrip

Gone are the days of co-drivers fumbling through clumsy map books, driving from hotel to B&B stressed about finding accommodation for the night, or making the mistake of eating at the first available restaurant only to be served a dodgy burger. If you're heading out into the unknown, these five apps could make the trip a whole lot more memorable… for the right reasons.

Waze
(Free, available for Android and IOS)

This GPS app is one of the best travel apps and we recently put it to the test on a roadtrip from Cape Town to Durban. Essentially, it’s a community-based app which lets users alert each other to accidents, closed roads and traffic jams on your route. For example; You were driving on the N1 and saw a big accident. You’d report it using the app and anyone travelling on that route would be alerted and alternative routes would be suggested.

Other features include: Turn-by-turn voice guided navigation, automatic rerouting as conditions change on the road, send your ETA and real-time progress updates to loved ones, find petrol stations and rest stops on routes, as well as sync to social media apps such as Facebook. There’s so much that Waze offers, but there’s a catch. Due to the app’s constant connectivity to satellites and cellphone towers, the battery consumption is high. Nothing an in-car charger can’t fix.

Google Maps
(Free, available for Android and IOS)

Google Maps comes standard with nearly all Android devices and it’s easy to find in Apple’s IOS appstore. It’s very comprehensive, offers live traffic, automatic rerouting and there’s support for 220 countries. There’s also navigation for walking and cycling, but arguably the biggest selling point is the world’s biggest search engine plugging into the map. You can do a normal Google search for something and the map functionality will take you there.

Zomato
(Free, available for Android and IOS)

One of the worst things about road tripping is that when you arrive at your destination, you’re most likely to be hungry and you will most likely not know where the best places to eat are located. Zomato is a free app that uses your location to suggest restaurants, cafes and bars near you. It is also community powered, meaning users can rate and review outlets.

Comments like, “try the breakfast here – it’s great value for money” are common and invaluable. There’s also Uber functionality meaning you can catch a taxi to the restaurant of your choice. You can also read menus, check out photos of the food, and contact the restaurant directly to make a reservation through the app. It’s addictive to use and it’s nice to be able to go into a new restaurant without worrying about food quality.

AirBNB
(Free, available for Android and IOS)

AirBNB is like Zomato, but for accommodation. You can discover thousands of places to stay in over 34 000 cities around the world and it’s perfect for those last-minute and spur-of-the-moment roadtrips. Bear in mind that it’s not just hotels and guesthouses that list on AirBNB. You’ll also find private hosts offering their villas and even tree houses (I kid you not) for you to stay in. You have the option of house sharing or you can have the place to yourself. As AirBNB puts it, “Live like a local, anywhere in the world. Join a community of millions of trusted travellers and verified hosts.”

FillApp
(Free, available for Android and IOS)

With the fuel price constantly changing, it helps immensely to know in advance when the next increase or decrease will occur. FillApp is a free app that will notify you when a change is imminent, predict the next change with reasonable accuracy and view the current price of all grades of petrol/diesel. It also is able to tell you how much it will cost to fill your tank, provided you tell it your tank capacity. So far we’ve liked how simple it is and the push notifications for changes have been most useful.

Jeep Shows Customisation with Mopar

We take a look at the Chrysler/Jeep/Dodge tuning and customisation arm Mopar. What can it offer South African customers?

People share special bonds with the cars they buy and sometimes simply having a car off the showroom floor isn’t enough. Vehicle customisation has gained worldwide popularity and as highlighted by Head of EMEA Mopar Service, Parts and Customer Care, Santo Ficili, during a recent Jeep Experience Days ‘ride & drive’ event held in Sicily, Italy, customisation influences over 50% of purchasing decisions, which is significant.

Mopar is Chrysler’s Service, Parts and Customer Care brand with a footprint in over 130 countries worldwide. In 2013, Mopar set up shop in Pretoria to support and improve service to dealers, distributors and customers in South Africa, Namibia and Botswana.

For Jeep, South Africa remains an important market and Mopar plays a key role in the brand's product offering. It’s important to note that Jeep is the most customised vehicle brand not only in the United States, but also in the European, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) regions and vehicle customisation is growing steadily in South Africa.

Mopar took the opportunity to show off the endless customisation options available to customers by creating numerous one-off Jeep Mopar concept vehicles which stood bathed in light as the sun set over Sicily. Take a look at these cool Jeep Mopar vehicles!

Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk

This "moparised" Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk looked particularly attractive in its ‘Mango Tango’ exterior body colour which was further enhanced with a special hood and side decals. The front grille is in matte black while the piano black mirrors round off the look. Mopar accessories added to the vehicle include rock rails, skid plates, roof bars and a roof rack which carries the spare wheel.

Inside, the Cherokee Trailhawk benefits from sill guards, ambient lighting and special floor mats. A dash of sportiness comes in by way of a pedal kit and Mopar centre caps. Storage in this Cherokee Trailhawk is enhanced with a special Mopar cargo tray and the vehicle rides on 17-inch mud-specifiic tyres.

Jeep Renegade Trailhawk

Jeep had two lightly moparised Jeep Renegade Trailhawk models on display. The Renegade Trailhawk in Omaha Orange featured side and hood ‘Star’ decals with a matte grille and mirror covers. This model was also kitted out with a pedal kit and special floor mats. The aggressive look is completed with 17-inch BF Goodrich mud tyres. The second example shares similar features with Omaha Orange model but comes in an Anvil body colour with a special hood and decals. This model also benefits from roof bars and a roof rack to mount the spare wheel.

Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon Sunriser

This Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon Sunriser was shown at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show and it looked striking in the metal thanks to a matte orange exterior body colour. The model benefits from fornt and rear off-road bumpers and comes fitted with 4-inch suspension lift kit. The interior is kitted out with dark grey leather seats with matching fluorescent orange stitching and inserts.

Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon Stealth

This Jeep Wrangler Rubicon Stealth was my favourite. It was shown at the 2014 Paris Motor Show and features an Iron Peltrox exterior body colour with a Pelle Frau leather interior. Standout features for this moparised Wrangler include off-road bumpers, skid plate, rock rails, power dome vented hood and a black mesh grille. This model rides on 17-inch alloy wheels.

Ford Fiesta RS Looking Likely in 2017

While Ford hasn't officially confirmed the arrival of a range-topping Fiesta performance model, it's starting to look very likely that such a production model will debut in 2017.

The Ford Fiesta ST is one of our favourite hot hatches thanks to a combination of an eager engine, wonderful handling and outstanding value for money. It's so good in fact, that it reached the semi-finalist stage in the first annual Cars.co.za Consumer Awards. The RS badge is currently reserved for the ultimate versions of performance-oriented Ford passenger vehicles. Think of the Ford Focus RS which is due to make landfall in South Africa in 2016 with its all-wheel drive setup and 2.3-litre EcoBoost turbo motor. There hasn't been a Fiesta RS for some time (the Mk3 RS Turbo was never sold here) but the RS moniker has recently been used on the brand's WRC contenders. We've previously reported on the possibility of a Fiesta RS arriving in 2017, and since then the the rumours have grown only stronger. The year 2017 will also mark 40 years of Ford Fiesta and it would be a perfect time to launch the ultimate incarnation of this vehicle.

So, the guessing game begins now as to what will power the Ford Fiesta RS and what it will look like. Expect a mini-Focus RS, with a monstrous and gaping front bumper, wide body kit, a big rally-style wing, big exhausts and we'd be very surprised if it wasn't available in trademark Ford Performance Blue. In terms of the hardware, performance-oriented brakes, wider track and a significantly reworked suspension will be the order of the day. Ford has numerous engine options for the Fiesta RS ranging from a reworked version of the current 1.6-litre four-pot turbo to a slightly detuned version of the 2.0-litre four-pot turbo that currently does duty in the Focus ST. Why do we say detuned? Well you just can't have the smaller and potentially cheaper model outperforming the more premium Focus ST can you? In terms of numbers, we think 175kW should be about right.

We're going to predict that it'll be front-wheel drive only as there's no all-wheel drive system available from Ford's parts bin for something as small as a Fiesta and it doesn't make financial sense to develop one from the ground up just for this high-end, limited-volume vehicle. Nevertheless, don't discount the possibility as such a rumour also persists.

While it's probably not going to look as extreme as this 2011 Ford Fiesta RS WRC Concept, expect a muscular fire-breathing pocket rocket to come our way in 2017/18.

Need a reminder of just how good the little Ford Fiesta ST is? Watch this video:
